Controversial: LifeSim is AI Slop

·by Cris Lenta

Someone called LifeSim "AI slop" the other day.

I'm not going to pretend the criticism has no basis.

But it also hurt my feelings a bit.

With this article I want to bring more clarity to the process. I want to make it clear that it is me, a human being, working long hours, every single day, to make LifeSim better.

I'm Not Electronic Arts

People hate EA, but want EA-quality from the get-go?

Here's the thing people don't see when they drop a comment like that: they're watching a product being built in real time, by a solo dev, working 60 hour weeks, in public.

And building in public means you see everything: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Electronic Arts can spend $200 million over 5 years, and reveal a polished trailer when they're ready. I can't do that. I'm one person. I don't have the luxury of building in silence until it's perfect.

What I have instead is speed, and obsession.

Every week, I try to make LifeSim better. The character depth, the world logic, the feel of conversations. I'm optimizing for feel and immersion. For the moment you forget you're playing.

It's Getting There

LifeSim until two months ago was a text-based RPG. It was rough. But it existed, and I was already spending every waking hour on it.

Now it has a 3D world (the real world), and it grows in complexity every single day.

The vision is the same. But through thousands of daily micro-decisions, LifeSim becomes more and more of what I envisioned.

Building in Public Is a Trade-Off

When you build in public, the risk is that people judge the work-in-progress by finished-product standards.

But I'd rather have people watch me build something great over time than reveal a polished shell with nothing behind it.

LifeSim is getting better every single week because I care about the details that most people don't notice until they're missing them.

Is it perfect today? No.

Will it be? I don't know.

But we are the most exciting time in history of being a creator. This makes me so excited - every single day.
