How to make a basement in The Sims 4
Open Build Mode (press B in Live Mode). Pick the Basement Tool next to the Build Room tool and drag it out on the ground floor. The basement forms under the level you are on. Add stairs so Sims can reach it. Press Page Down (Fn + Down Arrow on Mac) to see it. Basements are base game.

- Load your lot and press B to open Build Mode.
- Stay on the ground floor. Find the Basement Tool next to the Build Room tool.
- Click and drag on the lot. The basement forms under the level you are on.
- Press Page Down on PC or Fn + Down Arrow on Mac to go down to the basement. You can also click the floor down arrow at the top right.
- Place stairs on the ground floor so that they lead down into the basement.
- Add walls, floors, doors and lights on the basement level, the same as on any floor.
- To go two levels deep, go down to the first basement level and use the Basement Tool again.

- Open Build Mode on your lot.
- Select the Basement Tool next to the Build Room tool and drag out the area.
- Use the floor down control to see the basement. For the exact button, check the in-game Controls list.
- Place stairs from the ground floor down into the basement.
- Furnish the basement like any other room.

Basements and foundations
You do not have to tear down a house to add a basement or a foundation. EA says staircases adjust on their own.
If you add a foundation after the basement and stairs exist, select the staircase and adjust it to the new height.
Depth, height and open ceilings
Basements can be two levels deep. They follow the same wall height rules as floors above ground.
To make a pit or a tall room, go to the first basement level and select the block. Go back up, click the yellow strip on the block and choose Delete Ceiling.
EA's ideas for open basements: an underground garden, a pool observatory with windows, and a rocket silo two levels deep.
Common problems
The basement outline turns red
Remove fences or outdoor stairs in the way, and check for pools or fountains above the area. Players report these block the outline.
I can't use the Basement Tool on the basement level
The Basement Tool works from the floor above. On the basement level itself, use the normal wall and room tools.
Sims can't get into the basement
Place stairs from the ground floor down to the basement. Without stairs, Sims can't reach it.
Page Down does nothing on a Mac or laptop
Use Fn + Down Arrow, or click the floor down arrow at the top right of the screen.
