How to make custom content (CC) for The Sims 4

Most Sims 4 CC is made with Sims 4 Studio, a free fan-made tool. Clone an EA item, change its texture for a recolor or replace its mesh, then save it as a .package file. Make new meshes in Blender. Gameplay mods change tuning or add Python script files. Test everything in your Mods folder.

Download Sims 4 Studio from its official site. It is free and fan-made, and EA does not support it.
Start with a recolor. In Sims 4 Studio, clone an EA item, export its texture, change it in an image editor such as GIMP or Photoshop, and import it back.
Save your work. Sims 4 Studio saves it as a .package file.
When recolors feel easy, make your own mesh in Blender. Start with something simple, like a table.
Put the .package file in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods.
In the game, go to Game Options > Other and tick Enable Custom Content and Mods. Restart the game.
Test the item in Create a Sim, Build Mode or Live Mode. Check it looks and works right before you share it.

Types of CC and mods

EA uses Mods as the word for all player-made content. Custom Content (CC) adds items like hair, clothes or furniture. Game Mods add or change features, such as new traits, cheats or interactions. Some game mods use script code, but not all.

CC is usually a .package file. Script mods are .ts4script files and often come with a .package file. Mods and CC do not work on PlayStation or Xbox.

Tuning and script mods

Sims 4 Studio can also change an item's name, price, tags and tuning (how it works). Tuning mods edit the game's XML tuning and save as .package files.

Script mods are written in Python and compiled into a .ts4script file. Put a .ts4script file directly in Mods or one folder deep, no deeper, and tick Script Mods Allowed in Game Options > Other.

Where to share your CC

EA's mod policy says mods must be free. You can offer early access for a reasonable time and ask for donations on your own site. You can't use Sims logos or the Plumbob to promote your mods, and must not imply EA endorses them.

CurseForge has been EA's official place for Sims 4 mods since October 2022, but EA does not require creators to use it. Many creators also post on their own sites.

Common problems

My CC does not show up in the game

Tick Enable Custom Content and Mods in Game Options > Other and restart. Unzip .zip or .rar files. Keep .package files no more than five folders deep in Mods.

The item looks wrong, like a hat floating above the head

EA says this is a sign that the CC item is broken. Check the mesh and its placement in Blender and Sims 4 Studio, then test again.

My CC stopped working after a game update

Updates turn mods off. Test the game, check that your item still works with the new patch, fix it if needed, then turn mods back on.

My script mod does not run

Tick Script Mods Allowed, and keep the .ts4script file no more than one folder deep in Mods. Check the lastException file for errors.
