What are the best Character AI alternatives?
For open chat with many characters, try Chai. For one companion who knows you, try Replika, Kindroid, or Nomi. For a story with choices, try AI Dungeon. For a free chat with a custom bot, try a GPT in ChatGPT. For a whole town of people, try LifeSim.
Check the age rules first. Since November 25, 2025, Character.AI does not let users under 18 chat freely with characters. Most of the alternatives are also 18+. Only AI Dungeon, ChatGPT, and LifeSim accept teens.
We checked every fact on this page on October 15, 2026. We list each page that we used at the end. We make LifeSim, so LifeSim is on the list. We say where it does not fit. We left out apps that are only for adult content.

Each alternative in short
1. Chai
Chai is the closest to Character.AI. Users make AI characters and stories, and you chat with them. The company says users have made more than 25 million characters. It runs on Android, and in the browser as Chai Web, a separate site that does not share data with the app. On October 24, 2026, the iPhone app was not on the US App Store. It was there on October 14. Chai is free to start. On the web, Pro costs $9.99 a week or $159.99 a year. Chai says you must be 18 or older.
2. Replika
Replika gives you one AI companion. You talk by text, voice call, or video. It is out since 2017. The app is free, with paid plans for more features. Its terms say that you must be 18 or older.
3. Kindroid
In Kindroid, you make a character and choose its name, personality, backstory, look, and voice. It remembers past chats. It is a subscription. New accounts can try it first. The App Store price is $15.99 a month. You must be 18 or older.
4. Nomi
Nomi is a companion app with a focus on memory. You can make more than one Nomi and put them in a group chat. It is free to start, with no credit card. The Standard plan is $15.99 a month on the App Store. The App Store rates it 18+.
5. AI Dungeon
AI Dungeon is a text adventure. You pick a scenario or write your own, and the AI tells the story from your choices. It is free to play with no ads. Paid plans start at $9.99, and you can try them free for a week. The App Store rates it 13+. Read LifeSim vs AI Dungeon.
6. GPTs in ChatGPT
A GPT is a version of ChatGPT with its own instructions. Some GPTs play a character. Free ChatGPT users can use GPTs when they sign in. It is a plain chat window, with no character community. OpenAI says that ChatGPT is not for children under 13, and users from 13 to 18 need a parent’s consent.
7. LifeSim
LifeSim is our game. The characters live in a real city on a 3D map. They have homes, jobs, and friends. They remember what you told them, and their week goes on while you are away. It is free in the browser. It does not fit if you want a fandom character or a new scene every night.
What Character AI does well
You chat in your own words, with no dialogue wheel. Users make the characters, so you find characters from almost any show, book, or game. You can also talk to them by voice.
Character.AI is free with ads. Character.AI+ costs $9.99 a month on the App Store. The App Store rates it 18+. Teens can no longer chat freely, but they can still use Stories, a format where they pick characters and make choices in a plot.
LifeSim vs Character AI
In Character.AI, a character lives in your chat list. In LifeSim, the person you talk to has a home on a real street, on a map you can zoom into. They go to work and come back. You can stand outside and watch them arrive.
What you tell them stays in their memory. Their friends hear about it, because people talk. You have a body in the city, money to lose, and a reputation. When you come back after a few days, time has passed, and people went on with their week.
Bring your Character.AI character with you
You don't have to start from zero. Copy the share link or the profile link of a public character, and paste it in the LifeSim builder, under Import a character. If no link works, paste the description and the greeting instead. LifeSim writes the character as a person in your new life: a name, an age, a job, a past, a life goal, and who they are to you. It draws their looks in its own style.
Your chats and memories stay in Character.AI. Sexual content never comes over, because LifeSim is rated 13+. Read how to bring a Character.AI character into LifeSim.
Your first week in LifeSim
You pick a city. Any city, on a real map of Earth. You give your character a name and a reason to be there. Then you step out onto a real street, and there are people on it.
They’re not waiting for you. They have jobs to get to, homes to go back to, friends they see on Fridays. Say hi to one of them, in your own words, and they answer in theirs. Tell them something and they keep it. Tell their friend something and it gets around.
By the end of the week you have a place you go in the mornings, someone you’re avoiding, and someone you’re not. One player once stayed for thirteen hours straight. We checked.
LifeSim is a free game, in the browser and on iPhone. No ads and nothing to buy. Season 1 is in beta.
