Kano is the capital of Kano State in northern Nigeria and a center for trade and Islamic scholarship. Daily life moves between the mud-brick compounds of the old walled city, called the Birni, and busy open-air markets. People get around by walking, cycling, or riding yellow motorized tricycles known as Adaidaita Sahu.
Where to live in Kano

Work and industry in Kano
Kano is known as the Centre of Commerce in northern Nigeria. Major industries include wholesale trade, grain processing, leather tanning, and textile manufacturing. Factories and tanneries, such as Unique Leather Finishing Company, operate in the Bompai, Sharada, Challawa, and Tokarawa industrial estates. Big employers include the BUA Group, the Dangote Group, civil service ministries, and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Many people work as wholesale traders in Kantin Kwari Market or the Dawanau International Grains Market. Others work as traditional indigo dyers at the Kofar Mata Dye Pits or teach at Bayero University Kano. In LifeSim, you write any job into your character box to start. There is no career ladder or salary, and the people you meet react to your role in their own words.
Money and the cost of living in Kano
In real life, living costs vary across the city. Landlords in Nigeria usually collect residential rent for the whole year upfront. Nassarawa GRA, Hotoro GRA, and Bompai have the highest property and housing costs.
Districts like Tarauni, Zoo Road, and Sabon Gari offer mid-range housing. High-density neighborhoods inside the old city walls, like Dala and Gwale, and outer areas like Naibawa are cheaper.
People use the Nigerian Naira for daily spending. You pay with cash, bank transfers, cards, or mobile wallets like OPay, PalmPay, and Moniepoint. In street markets and with Adaidaita Sahu tricycle riders, you bargain before you buy or board. LifeSim does not charge rent or pay a salary, and your cash changes through your activities and chats.
A sample life: a student at Bayero University
Musa, 21, moves to Kano to study at Bayero University Kano and lives in Tarauni. He sets two life goals: make close friends in his department and visit every historic gate of the Birni. In his first week, he searches the map for Gidan Makama Museum and walks there after his morning classes.
Outside the museum, Musa chats with a local trader in his own words. In Hausa culture, people always start conversations with greetings like Sannu or Ina kwana, and Musa does the same. The trader remembers Musa's polite greeting in his journal and texts him a few days later.
In week two, Musa plans an outing with three classmates to climb the stairs of Dala Hill. They walk there together on the 3D map and talk as a group. Each day ends with a recap of the moments, and his friends remember the trip.
Food, markets, and going out in Kano
Local dishes in Kano include tuwo shinkafa served with miyan kuka, masa rice cakes, danwake bean dumplings, and gurasa flatbread. In the evenings, people gather at roadside Mai Shayi stalls for tea and bread or buy spiced suya and kilishi. Popular cold drinks include fura da nono and zobo, while alcohol is prohibited across most of the city.
