Is there a game where you can live in Kampala?

Kampala life simulator

Yes. LifeSim puts you in the real Kampala, on a 3D map of its hills and streets. You create a character and live there day by day. The people in the city have jobs, routines, and memories of what you say. It is free and runs in the browser or on iPhone.

Life in Kampala

Kampala is the capital of Uganda, built across green hills near the northern shores of Lake Victoria. Daily life happens outdoors along busy commercial streets, in open-air markets like Nakasero, and at neighborhood hangouts called kafundas. Office workers, university students, and street vendors share the same hills and streets every day.

Where to live in Kampala

Kololo

A quiet hilltop area with embassies, upscale restaurants, and apartment complexes.

Wandegeya

A student neighborhood next to Makerere University with hostels, copy shops, and street food stalls.

Ntinda

A busy residential suburb with family homes, local markets, and the Ndere Cultural Centre.

Kabalagala

A late-night entertainment district filled with bars, clubs, and casual eateries.

Muyenga

Known as Tank Hill, a breezy neighborhood with views of Lake Victoria, cafes, and guesthouses.

A sample life: a student's first week in Wandegeya

David, 20, starts a new life as a student at Makerere University living in a hostel in Wandegeya. He writes his name, age, and neighborhood into the character box. He sets two life goals: pass his first year and make friends from across Uganda.

On Monday, David searches the 3D map for a spot near campus and walks there. He meets a classmate named Sarah and talks to her in his own words. Because characters keep a journal of past events, Sarah remembers David's name the next day.

By Friday, Sarah adds David to a group text thread with two other students. They plan an outing to the Uganda Museum on Kira Road and walk there together on Saturday. Later that night, a house party appears on the map in Kabalagala, and David decides to go.

Money and the cost of living in Kampala

In the real Kampala, the official currency is the Ugandan Shilling. People use cash for matatu taxis and roadside rolex stalls. Mobile money services like MTN MoMo and Airtel Money handle most daily bills and shop payments.

Living costs vary by neighborhood across the city hills. Leafy areas with diplomatic compounds and luxury apartments, such as Kololo, Nakasero, and Naguru, are the most expensive. Neighborhoods like Ntinda, Bugolobi, and Bukoto sit in the middle, while outer suburbs like Kisaasi and Namungoona are cheaper.

LifeSim does not charge rent or pay a regular salary. You do not pay bills or buy homes in the game. Instead, your cash goes up or down through your activities and your chats with other people.

A day in Kampala in LifeSim

Suppose you play a 28-year-old bank teller living in Ntinda. In the morning, you check your daily to-do list and calendar. You search the map for a cafe along Acacia Avenue in Kisementi and walk there before work.

In the afternoon, heavy rain falls on the 3D map during the wet season. Your boss texts you on his own to ask about a project, and you reply in your own words. After work, you search for Nakasero Market and walk through the center of town.

In the evening, a birthday drinks event appears on the map near Bandali Rise in Bugolobi. You join the gathering and talk with the guests. The day ends with a recap of your moments, and the people you met update their memories.

Work and jobs in Kampala

Kampala is the center of Uganda's economy, with major industries in telecommunications, banking, food processing, and retail trade. Big employers in the city include MTN Uganda, Airtel Uganda, Stanbic Bank, and the Kampala Capital City Authority. Many factories operate in the Nakawa and Namanve industrial parks.

Many residents also work as mobile money agents, teachers, NGO project coordinators, or market traders in places like Owino Market. In LifeSim, you can have any of these jobs by writing it into your character description at the start. There is no career ladder or job mini-game, so your work shapes how people talk to you.

How it works

  1. Describe your character in one text box. Name Kampala in the text.
  2. The game reads the city from your text and puts you in the real Kampala, on a 3D map.
  3. Live day by day. Go to real places, meet people, and talk to them in your own words.
