Life in Alexandria

Alexandria stretches along the Mediterranean coast as a narrow strip between the sea and Lake Mariout. Daily life centers on the waterfront Corniche promenade, busy street markets, and traditional sidewalk cafes called ahwas. Residents ride the blue Al Raml trams, share mashrou minibuses, and enjoy a coastal pace distinct from inland Egypt.

Where to live in Alexandria

Mahatet El Raml

The historic downtown with European-style buildings, bookshops, pedestrian squares, and old coffeehouses like Trianon.

Anfoushi (Bahary)

A traditional fishing peninsula by the Eastern Harbor with boatyards, fish markets, and open-air seafood grills.

Smouha

A busy inland residential and commercial hub built around sporting clubs, private hospitals, and traffic roundabouts.

Stanley and Roushdy

Upscale coastal neighborhoods with high-rise seafront apartments, sandy beaches, and modern cafes near Stanley Bridge.

Montaza

A quiet, green eastern district bordering historic royal palace gardens and calm family beaches.

Money and the cost of living in Alexandria

The local currency is the Egyptian Pound, called geneh in Egyptian Arabic. You pay with cash for street food, small shops, and shared mashrou minibuses. Many residents also use bank cards, the InstaPay transfer app, mobile wallets like Vodafone Cash, and Fawry payment kiosks. Landlords and private schools sometimes price upscale rentals and tuition in US dollars.

Living costs vary across the city. Seafront apartments along the Corniche and homes in Kafr Abdu, Stanley, Roushdy, and San Stefano cost the most. Central neighborhoods like Smouha, Sporting, Sidi Gaber, and Cleopatra offer middle range housing. Outer and working class districts like Miami, Mandara, Moharam Bek, Karmouz, and El Agami have much lower rents.

LifeSim does not charge rent or pay a regular salary. Your cash changes directly through the activities you do and the chats you have.

A day in Alexandria in LifeSim

Say you start as a 26-year-old chemical engineer living in Smouha. In the morning, you search for Mohamed Ahmed Restaurant on Shakour Street to get falafel and fava beans. You walk to the historic downtown around Mahatet El Raml and chat with a coworker in your own words.

In the afternoon, a friend texts you to plan an outing along the Corniche near Stanley Bridge. You invite two neighbors, walk to a sidewalk ahwa, and talk as a group. Later, you join a grand opening happening at a cafe in Roushdy before the daily recap saves your memories.

Famous places to search for on the map

You can search the 3D map for any real landmark in the city. Go to the Citadel of Qaitbay on the site of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse and meet friends by the water. Walk along the Corniche to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, or take a group outing to the Montaza Palace Gardens in the east.

Inland, you can find Pompey's Pillar and the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. Search for the Alexandria National Museum on Fouad Street or the Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque in Anfoushi. You can also visit markets like Zanket El Setat in Mansheya or Souk El Attarine to talk with local shopkeepers.

A sample life: a student at Alexandria University

Nour, 20, moves into a flat in Sidi Bishr to study at Alexandria University. Nour sets two life goals: make close friends in the city and visit every historic site. In the first week, Nour meets a classmate near the campus and they eat spicy kebda at Kebda El Fallah.

In week two, the classmate starts a group text with two students from the Arab Academy. They plan a weekend outing to Bahary to see the fishing boats and eat seafood near the El-Medan Market. By the end of the month, they remember every conversation and invite Nour to a house party in Miami.
