Life in Abidjan

Abidjan sits on the Ébrié Lagoon and serves as the economic hub of Francophone West Africa. People work in Le Plateau's office towers, trade in busy markets, and eat grilled fish at open-air maquis. The city stays warm all year and is the home of Zouglou and Coupé-Décalé music.

Where to live in Abidjan

Le Plateau

High-rise office towers, banks, ministries, and big daytime commuter crowds on a central peninsula.

Cocody

Leafy streets, embassies, large villas, and the main public university campus.

Marcory

Dense residential streets next to Zone 4, a commercial hub with lounges and restaurants.

Treichville

A working-class port district with a central market, music bars, and street fish grills.

Yopougon

The largest commune by population, filled with families, students, industrial zones, and open-air bars.

Famous places to search for in Abidjan

You can search the 3D map for real landmarks across the city. In Le Plateau, go to the Cathédrale Saint-Paul d'Abidjan, the Grande Mosquée du Plateau, or La Pyramide. You can also meet friends outside the Musée des Civilisations de Côte d'Ivoire or the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny.

South of the lagoon, walk through the streets around the Grand Marché de Treichville. You can chat with market traders and other residents there. Buildings show from the outside only, so all meetings happen on the streets.

For nature, plan an outing with friends to the Parc National du Banco in the north. You can also walk together to the Jardin Botanique de Bingerville on the eastern edge of the city. Pick the spot on the map, invite your group, and talk as you walk.

Money and the cost of living in Abidjan

The local currency is the West African CFA franc. For daily purchases, people use cash or mobile money apps like Wave, Orange Money, and MTN MoMo. Street food like garba and alloco, open-air maquis meals, and rides on SOTRA buses or shared taxis cost little. Upscale restaurants, imported groceries, and large malls accept bank cards.

Housing costs depend on the commune. Upscale areas like Cocody, Le Plateau, and southern Marcory have the highest rents. Neighborhoods like Treichville, Bingerville, and residential pockets of Marcory offer mid-range apartments. Large communes like Yopougon, Abobo, and Koumassi are the cheapest places to live.

LifeSim does not charge rent or pay a regular salary. You do not pay utility bills or transport fares. Instead, your cash changes directly through the activities you do and the chats you have.

A sample life: a student's first week in Cocody

Koffi, 20, starts a new life as a student at the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Cocody. He sets a life goal to make three close friends and visit every commune. On Monday, he searches the map for the Allocodrome in Cocody to eat grilled fish and alloco.

There, he talks in his own words with a classmate named Awa. Awa remembers the chat in her journal and texts Koffi on Wednesday. She invites him to a group outing at the Parc National du Banco.

On Friday night, a house party happening appears on the map in Yopougon. Koffi goes there, meets a local musician, and ends the day with a full recap of his moments.

Getting around Abidjan and the Ébrié Lagoon

Abidjan sits on peninsulas and islands around the Ébrié Lagoon. In real life, people cross the water on SOTRA ferries or drive across five major bridges. For daily trips, residents use gbakas, metered orange-red taxis, and color-coded wôro-wôro shared taxis.

In LifeSim, you do not drive cars or wait in bridge traffic. You use the place search to find any street, market, or office tower on the 3D map. Click the location, walk there on the real street grid, and start talking to people.
