Life in Surabaya

Surabaya is the capital of East Java and the second-largest city in Indonesia. Residents spend hot days in offices or air-conditioned malls like Tunjungan Plaza and Pakuwon Mall. At night, neighborhood kampung alleys and street food stalls fill with people meeting for coffee and dinner.

Where to live in Surabaya

Gubeng

Doctors, students, and commuters cross paths near Surabaya Gubeng station and the riverside Monumen Kapal Selam.

Tegalsari

Office workers in high-rise towers share streets with historic hotels, malls, and traditional kampung alleys.

Sukolilo

University students live in boarding houses called kost and fill budget eateries and late-night study cafes.

Pabean Cantian

Spice merchants, dockworkers, and wholesale traders work in narrow streets around the historic Arab and Chinatown quarters.

Wiyung

Families and professionals live in gated estates and high-rise condos near golf courses and big malls in West Surabaya.

Work and big employers in Surabaya

Surabaya is a major center for maritime trade, shipbuilding, manufacturing, and retail. Big employers include PT PAL Indonesia at the shipyards and Pelindo at the port. Companies like PT HM Sampoerna, Maspion Group, Wings Group, and Pakuwon Group also employ many residents.

Universities such as Universitas Airlangga and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember bring students and teachers to the city. In LifeSim, you write any job into your character text, like an engineer or a food vendor. There is no career ladder or job score, and people react to your job in conversation.

Money and the cost of living in Surabaya

Indonesia uses the Rupiah for all daily transactions. People commonly pay with QRIS by scanning codes through digital wallets like GoPay, OVO, DANA, and ShopeePay. Many shops and restaurants also accept bank cards. You still need cash for small street food stalls, traditional markets, and neighborhood coffee shops.

Living costs vary by neighborhood across the city. Central districts like Tegalsari and western estates in Wiyung and Citraland are the most expensive. Mid-range neighborhoods include Gubeng, Mulyosari, and Jemursari. Developing eastern and northern areas like Rungkut, Gunung Anyar, and Kenjeran offer cheaper housing.

LifeSim does not charge rent or pay a regular salary. Your cash changes directly through the activities you do and the chats you have.

Getting around Surabaya

Most residents commute by private motorcycle, car, or app-based motorcycle taxis called ojek online. Public buses include the Suroboyo Bus, Trans Semanggi Suroboyo, and WiraWiri Suroboyo feeder microbuses. KAI Commuter trains also connect Surabaya Gubeng and Surabaya Pasar Turi stations with nearby towns.

Walking is mostly common along shaded streets like Jalan Tunjungan and Jalan Darmo. In LifeSim, you cannot drive vehicles or ride trains. You search the 3D map for a station, a park, or a market like Pasar Atom, and you go there.

A sample life: a student's first week in Sukolilo

Budi, 19, moves into a student kost in Sukolilo to study engineering at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. He sets two life goals: make close friends in his neighborhood and visit the Jembatan Suramadu bridge.

On Tuesday, Budi searches the map for a café near campus and meets a classmate there. They talk in their own words about classes and local food like rujak cingur. On Friday night, a house party happening appears on the map in Gubeng, and Budi goes with his new friend.

On Sunday, his neighbor starts a group text to plan an outing to Taman Bungkul. Each day ends with a recap of its moments, and Budi's friends remember their chats.

Seasons and weather in Surabaya

Surabaya has a tropical savanna climate that stays hot and humid all year. During the daytime heat, people often visit air-conditioned malls like Tunjungan Plaza and Pakuwon Mall. After sunset, people gather at open-air warkop stalls for cangkrukan, the local custom of late-night chatting over coffee.

The dry season runs from May to October with clear skies and strong sun. The wet season from November to April brings heavy afternoon monsoon rain. The 3D map in LifeSim shows the weather as you walk around the city.
