How to become a mermaid in the game
The fastest way to make a mermaid is in Create a Sim. When you make a new Sim, select the Add Mermaid option from the menu. Remember that the mermaid form becomes available starting at the Teen age.
To turn an existing Sim into a mermaid during gameplay, you need Mermadic Kelp. Have your Sim eat the Mermadic Kelp to receive the Strange Sensations moodlet. While that moodlet is active, send your Sim to swim in the ocean to finish the transformation.
You can also use a cheat in Live mode to make your Sim a mermaid right away. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac to open the cheat console. Type testingcheats true, then enter traits.equip_trait trait_OccultMermaid to apply the occult status.
How to cure a mermaid and become human
If you want your mermaid to become a regular Sim again, you must use Mermadic Kelp. First, tell your mermaid to eat Mermadic Kelp. This action gives your Sim the Heightened Sensations moodlet.
Watch your Sim's active moodlets closely after they eat the first piece. While the Heightened Sensations moodlet still lasts, have your Sim eat Mermadic Kelp a second time. Eating the second piece while the moodlet is active removes the mermaid form.
You can also remove the mermaid status with a cheat in Live mode. Open the cheat console and enable testing cheats by typing testingcheats true. Then, enter traits.remove_trait trait_OccultMermaid to turn your mermaid back into a regular Sim.
Moon effects and deaths for mermaids
The lunar cycle affects your mermaid during the Full Moon phase. When the Full Moon is out, mermaids receive the Hydration Loss Lowered effect. This benefit lasts for 12 hours.
Being a mermaid also changes what hazards can kill your Sim. Mermaids are safe from Death by Drowning. In the game files, Death by Pufferfish is also listed as a related death for mermaids.
