Life in Colombia

Daily life in Colombia centers on close extended families, early breakfasts of warm arepas, and a large midday lunch. Major cities sit in the Andes mountains and along the Caribbean coast, separated by steep mountain ranges. Frequent Monday holidays called puentes festivos give people three-day weekends for family trips.

Where to live in Colombia

Bogotá

The cool, high-altitude capital in the Andes, full of brick apartments, universities, and offices.

Medellín

A mountain valley city with mild weather, textile shops, and hillside neighborhoods connected by Metrocable.

Cali

A warm southwestern city known for neighborhood salsa schools and evening street music.

Cartagena

A humid Caribbean port with a colonial walled city, painted balconies, and beach tourism.

Barranquilla

A busy industrial river and sea port that hosts a major annual street carnival.

Manizales

A steep mountain city in the Eje Cafetero surrounded by coffee fincas and rural towns.

School and work in Colombia

Students in Colombia finish grade 11 to earn their Bachiller diploma and take the national Saber 11 exam. Many go on to universities or study free technical skills at SENA. You can write a SENA student or a university student into your character prompt.

Common jobs include growing coffee and cut flowers, making textiles, and working in banks or bilingual call centers. Standard work hours run from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM with a long midday pause. LifeSim has no salary or career ladder, so your job shapes your daily chats and goals.

Small towns and the Coffee Axis

You do not have to stay in a big city. Every named town in the Eje Cafetero, like Manizales, Pereira, and Armenia, is on the 3D map. In this mountain region, life centers on steep coffee farms called fincas and agricultural towns.

In the real Coffee Axis, classic Willys Jeeps called yipaos carry goods up mountain roads. In the deep south, the river port of Leticia sits on the Amazon River. Name any small town in your prompt, and the game puts you on its real streets.

A sample life: a first month in Medellín

Mateo, 22, lives in a hillside neighborhood in Medellín and studies software on his own. He sets two life goals: meet local shop owners and plan an outing with new friends. Each morning, he searches the map for a local panadería and walks there.

In week two, a neighbor texts him to join a group chat. They plan an outing to a park in the valley and talk as a group. Later that week, a birthday drinks event appears on the map, and Mateo joins. Each day ends with a recap, and his friends remember what he said.

Customs and local words in Colombia

Colombians value formal politeness in daily life. People in Bogotá often use usted with friends and family, while people in Medellín use vos and say parce for friend. Shopkeepers say a la orden to greet you, and people reply con mucho gusto when you thank them.

Family ties are close, and young adults often live with their parents until marriage. You can edit your cast in LifeSim to include your parents and siblings. On Sundays, families gather for meals or walk on avenues closed to cars for Ciclovía.

Food and going out in Colombian cities

Lunch, called almuerzo, takes place between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM and is the biggest meal of the day. Workers eat a corrientazo at neighborhood diners, which brings soup, rice, beans, meat, fried plantain, and fresh juice. In Bogotá, people eat a thick chicken and potato soup called ajiaco.

All day long, people drink small cups of sweet black coffee called tinto and buy cheese arepas or buñuelos at bakeries. In LifeSim, you can search the map for a real café, bakery, or restaurant and walk there with friends. Buildings show from the outside only, and there are no cooking mini-games.

How it works

  1. Describe your character in one text box. Name a city or town in Colombia in the text.
  2. The game reads the place from your text and puts you there, on a 3D map of the real streets.
  3. Live day by day. Go to real places, meet people, and talk to them in your own words.
