The Sims Online

The Sims Online ran from 2002 to 2008. Why it failed, how FreeSO kept it alive until 2024, and what online Sims games you can play today.

The Sims Online was the first online version of The Sims. Maxis made it, EA published it, and it came out on Windows in December 2002.

The game put thousands of real players into shared cities. Each city ran on its own server. Will Wright was the designer. The game had a monthly subscription, like other online games of that time.

Wikipedia lists the main parts of the game:

  • You made a Sim with a name, a gender and a look, as in The Sims.
  • You managed eight needs, such as hunger, energy, fun and social.
  • You bought a lot in a city and built a house or a business on it.
  • You earned Simoleons from job objects, tip jars, vending machines and pay doors.
  • You talked to other players in open text chat, with speech bubbles.

Each player could have one Sim per city and three Sims in total. Some job objects were minigames for groups, such as a maze and a pizza game. A Sim learned skills faster when other Sims practiced the same skill on the same lot.

This post gives the dates, the reasons for the failure, and the ways to play today. We make LifeSim, a free life sim. We say where it fits and where it does not.

The Sims Online came out on December 17, 2002. The last server, under the name EA-Land, closed on August 1, 2008.

The table shows the main dates from the sources.

DateWhat happened
Late 2002A public beta ran for two months (Wikipedia).
December 17, 2002The game launched in North America on Windows.
2003Active subscriptions peaked near 105,000, by one analyst estimate.
February 21, 2008The last Sims Online cities closed. EA relaunched the game as EA-Land (Engadget).
April 29, 2008EA announced the end of EA-Land.
August 1, 2008EA-Land closed at 4:35 a.m. PST (Wikipedia).

What changed in EA-Land

EA-Land was not a new game. It was The Sims Online on new servers, with new features. Engadget lists these changes:

  • Free players and paying subscribers in one world.
  • More than one avatar on one account.
  • Uploads of custom content, and stores that players ran.
  • Links to the web and to Facebook apps.

EA-Land lasted only weeks before EA announced its end. After the announcement, EA stopped the subscription charges. Engadget says that paying subscribers got an offer. They could take $15 off a game at the EA Store, or three months of Club Pogo.

Wikipedia does not agree with itself about the rename. One part says that EA announced EA-Land in March 2007. Another part says February 2008. The Engadget report from February 2008 supports the later date.

The Sims Online failed because it had few things to do, a repetitive daily loop, and a monthly fee. Wikipedia gives these three reasons first.

EA had high targets. It wanted 200,000 subscribers by March 2003 and 400,000 by the end of 2003. The game missed both targets. Subscriptions stayed under 100,000 for most of 2003 and then fell.

The reasons that people gave

  • No real economy. Gordon Walton said that it needed “a fully functioning economy and more fun activities.”
  • The price. Jessica Lewis suggested that the price and the fee stopped buyers. EA cut the box price from $49.99 to $29.99.
  • Little player content at launch. Don Hopkins named this problem.
  • The wrong model for the fans. Will Wright felt that a subscription did not suit the main audience of The Sims.
  • Timing and reviews. Analysts pointed to a late December launch and weak reviews.

The reviews were mixed. Wikipedia gives a Metacritic score of 70. GameSpot gave 6.7 and IGN gave 7.2. The game still won the E3 2002 Game Critics Award for Best Simulation Game.

The players made their own stories

Some players filled the empty time with scams and fake crime. In the city of Alphaville, a group of players called themselves a Mafia. They took money and property from other players.

Peter Ludlow, a philosophy professor, wrote about these events in a blog, The Alphaville Herald. EA banned his account because his profile linked to the blog. The ban got wide press coverage.

EA has not made another online city game of this type. For the next numbered game, read our Sims 5 release date guide.

Not on a public server today. EA closed the official game in 2008, and the main fan server, FreeSO, closed in December 2024.

What FreeSO was

FreeSO was a free fan remake of The Sims Online. Its GitHub page calls it “a full reimplementation of The Sims Online, using Monogame.” It is only an engine. It needs the original game files to run.

The open beta started on January 6, 2017. Game Developer reports that the server was ready for 200 users. More than 1,000 players tried to sign in on the first day, and the server failed. The creator, Rhys, closed the game for a time and opened it again later.

How FreeSO closed

FreeSO announced the end on November 27, 2024. The team locked the save data on December 6, 2024, for a full export. The “The FreeSO Finale” post gave December 8 as the closing date. The later post “The End” says that the server “completely shut down as of December 9th 2024.”

What comes next: the Archive client

The FreeSO team is making an Archive client. The client runs a small server on your own computer. You can explore the old city, Sunrise Crater, and you can invite friends.

The September 2025 progress post lists these features:

  • Play as any Sim that was in Sunrise Crater, or make your own Sims.
  • Host tools that block unwanted players.
  • Automatic port forwarding when your router supports it.
  • A setting file for a dedicated server that stays open without you.

The Archive client has no release date. On June 1, 2026, the team said that it is “not quite ready to put a date on it.” Check freeso.org for news.

Other servers and Simitone

The FreeSO code is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The GitHub page says that FreeSO is “now a technology base for other The Sims Online servers to build upon.” We found no public server that we can name with confidence. Do not download a client from a site that you do not trust.

Simitone is a separate project from the same base. It is a new front end for The Sims 1, not for The Sims Online. It needs a legal copy of The Sims: Complete Collection, and it runs on Windows only. Its page says that it is still in development.

No. In October 2026, EA runs no Sims game with a shared online world. The Sims 4 is single-player, and Project Rene has no release date.

The Sims 4

The Steam page of The Sims 4 lists “Single-player” as its only mode. The base game is free to download. Read is The Sims 4 free for what the free version includes.

A fan mod, S4MP, lets up to 12 players share one household in real time. EA does not make the mod. Its CurseForge page shows version 0.77.1, dated October 10, 2026. Our Sims 4 multiplayer guide explains the setup.

The Sims Social

The Sims Social was a Facebook game. EA announced its end on April 15, 2013, and it went offline on June 14, 2013. EA said that “the number of players and amount of activity has fallen off.”

The Sims Mobile

The Sims Mobile was a Sims game for phones, and EA closed it. Read our post on The Sims Mobile shutdown for the dates.

Project Rene

Project Rene is the next social Sims game. In January 2026, EA said that it “has evolved to focus on social multiplayer play.” EA also said that it “is not the successor to The Sims 4.” The roadmap calls it a mobile-first game.

EA gave no release date. It said only that players can expect to hear more in 2026. Follow the news in our Project Rene guide.

For a shared world

Second Life is the closest match to the cities of The Sims Online. Its site describes “thousands of virtual experiences and communities.” You can join for free. Read our list of games like Second Life for more options. For avatar chat, see games like IMVU.

For a life sim

Our guide to games like The Sims compares the big options. For a wider view, see our list of life sim games.

Where LifeSim fits, and where it does not

LifeSim is a game that we make. It is single-player. You do not meet other real players in it. Do not pick it if you want the shared city of The Sims Online.

LifeSim fits a different need: a world that talks back. You pick a real city on a 3D map of Earth. The people there are AI characters with jobs, homes and friends. You talk to them in your own words, and they remember you.

You live one life, a day at a time. LifeSim is free, with no ads, nothing to buy and no subscription. It plays in any browser at play.lifesim.com and on iPhone and iPad. Season 1 is in beta. Read how to play LifeSim, or compare more life simulator browser games.

Is The Sims Online free?

The official game is gone, so you cannot buy it or pay for it. FreeSO was free while it ran. The coming Archive client is also from the free FreeSO project.

How many people played The Sims Online?

Analyst Bruce Woodcock estimated that active subscriptions peaked near 105,000 in 2003. Early 2003 reports put subscribers at 80,000 to 85,000, with about 40,000 on a free trial.

Who made The Sims Online?

Maxis made the game, and EA Games published it. Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, was the designer.

Was The Sims Online on consoles?

No. The game came out on Windows only.

Can I play The Sims 1 on a modern PC?

Simitone is one fan option on Windows. It needs a legal copy of The Sims: Complete Collection. For tips on the next game in the series, see our Sims 2 cheats.

Is FreeSO coming back?

Not as a public server, as far as the team has said. The team plans the Archive client, which you host yourself. No release date exists.
