Is there a free game developer simulator game?
Game developer simulator
Yes. In LifeSim, you play a game developer on a 3D map of a real city. You talk to studio coworkers in your own words, and they remember what you say. The game is free and runs in your browser.
A junior programmer hunting a boss bug in MontrealHow to play a game developer in LifeSim
- Describe your game developer in the text box, including your name, age, studio role, and city.
- Use place search on the 3D map to find an office building, a cafe, or a park in your city.
- Set life goals and a daily to-do list, such as finishing a level blockout or fixing a collision glitch.
- Talk to your studio boss, artists, and testers in your own words in person or by group text.
A sample life: the first week in Montreal
Chloe, 24, finishes her diploma at NAD in Montreal and joins a studio in the Mile End neighborhood. She sets a life goal to finish her first two-week sprint without missing a deadline. On Monday morning, she walks the real streets of Mile End to her office building.
During the morning stand-up meeting, she talks to the lead physics programmer in her own words. They discuss a collision bug that lets the final boss fall through the floor. On Friday, her coworkers invite her in a group text to celebrate the new playable build at a local cafe.
A day in a Tokyo game studio
Your morning starts with a daily to-do list on your screen. You check your tasks, such as greyboxing a rough level layout or rigging 3D character skeletons in Blender. You use place search to find your studio office in Tokyo and walk there on the 3D map.
At work, you talk with the environment artist and sound designer about merging assets in Git. If a big alpha deadline is near, your boss texts you to stay late for crunch. At night, the day ends with a recap of your conversations, tasks, and cash changes.
Life outside the studio: friends and days off
Game development often brings long overtime hours and harsh online feedback from players. When the weekend comes, you need time away from dual-monitor workstations and Jira boards. You can plan an outing, invite friends from a weekend game jam, and walk to a park together.
Happenings also pop up on the city map around you. You can join a karaoke night in Akihabara, a house party in Seattle, or a birthday drink in London. The people you meet have their own routines and remember what you tell them.
From junior tester to veteran developer
There is no career ladder menu or job performance score in LifeSim. You play your career as a story across years. You might start at age 20 in quality assurance testing in Los Angeles or study at DigiPen near Seattle.
As days pass, your character ages through life stages. If a studio closes after a game goes gold, you can edit your cast or move to San Francisco for the Game Developers Conference at the Moscone Center. On desktop, you can even use Build mode to draw a 3D studio building on your street.

Questions
Is there a coding mini-game or studio budget screen?
No. LifeSim has no coding mini-games, skill bars, or studio budget menus. If you want to manage game genres and studio finances, play Game Dev Tycoon or Game Dev Story instead.
Can I walk inside my game studio office?
No. The 3D map shows real buildings from the outside only. You go to a real office building or cafe on the map and play out your workday in conversation.
Do real game developers need a license or degree?
No government license is required anywhere to be a game developer. Most studios hire based on a practical portfolio, such as playable games from game jams, code on GitHub, or 3D art reels on ArtStation.
Which cities can I play in?
You can play in any city or town on Earth. Popular hubs include Tokyo, Montreal, San Francisco, Seattle, London, and Los Angeles.
Is LifeSim free to play?
Yes. LifeSim is free in your browser on desktop and phone, with no download and no paid items.
