Can you play The Sims 4 offline?

Yes, after you install and activate it. See what works offline, what does not, and what to do before you travel.

Yes, after you install and activate the game. The EA FAQ says: “Once installed, you don’t need to be online to play.” The same FAQ says that you need a connection to activate the game and to use online features.

So the first start needs the internet. The later sessions do not. This post lists what works offline, what does not, and what to do before a flight or a long trip.

We opened each source on October 9, 2026. We could not open the EA help threads on offline errors, so we do not repeat the claims of players here. You read this on the LifeSim blog. We make a browser life sim, and we say where our game does not fit.

The EA FAQ has two lines that matter. We quote both.

  • “An internet connection is required to activate your game and to access additional content and online features.”
  • “Once installed, you don’t need to be online to play.”

The FAQ also says that you need the EA app and an EA Account to install and register the game. The FAQ answers the question “Does it require the EA app?” with yes.

The Steam page lists “broadband internet” in the minimum and the recommended requirements. We read the store data on October 9, 2026. The Steam page does not say if the requirement is for the install or for each session. Read it together with the FAQ: the FAQ is the clearer statement.

The Steam page also lists “Single-player” and “Save Anytime” as features. Both fit offline play. The game has no online match or shared world.

Anything that comes from EA servers does not work. The EA FAQ names “additional content and online features”. Three items fit this description.

The Gallery

The FAQ describes the Gallery as an in-game place to browse, share, and download households, rooms, and lots that other players made. The EA page says that you can add content to your game or share your own creations there. Both actions send data over the internet. Offline, the Gallery has nothing to show.

New packs and kits

You download a pack through the EA app. The EA page says that packs and kits need “The Sims 4 & all game updates”. So you must be online to buy a pack, to download it, and to update the base game. See how to install Sims 4 packs.

Game updates

The EA page lists a game update with the headline “Console Marketplace & Fixes for All”. An update comes through the launcher. We found no source that says how the game behaves after a very long time offline. We could not confirm this point.

Do these steps while you have a connection. They come from the two EA statements above.

  1. Install the EA app and sign in with your EA Account.
  2. Install The Sims 4 and start it one time. This activates the game.
  3. Install every pack that you want. Packs need a download.
  4. Let the game update fully.
  5. Download the Gallery items that you want to use. Put them in your game first.
  6. Close the game. Start it one more time to make sure that it loads.

Step 6 is our advice, not an EA rule. It costs two minutes. It tells you about a problem while you can still fix it.

Your saves stay on your device. See the Sims 4 save file location for the folder. A backup in that folder protects you from a lost save during a trip.

The EA FAQ says that the game is playable on PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation. The offline sentence sits in the PC section of the FAQ. We found no equal sentence for the console section. We could not confirm the offline rules for a console.

For a handheld, read The Sims 4 on Steam Deck. For a laptop that runs macOS, read The Sims 4 on a Mac.

We found no source that gives the free base game different offline rules. The Steam store data says: “The base game of The Sims™ 4 is free to download.” It adds that optional in-game purchases exist.

A free game still needs the activation step. The EA FAQ does not split the rule by price. For the cost of each part of the game, read is The Sims 4 free.

The EA pages that we opened do not describe mods. The EA game page has the headline “Custom Content is back on the menu!” but it does not define the term. We found no EA statement on mods offline.

A mod lives on your device, so it can load offline. A new mod needs a download. A game update can break a mod, and an update needs a connection. Plan your updates before you go offline. For the risks, read Sims 4 mods.

This paragraph is our reasoning, not an EA statement.

LifeSim is the opposite choice. It runs in a browser at play.lifesim.com, so there is nothing to install or to activate. You create a character, pick a real city, and talk with the people there in open text.

LifeSim does not fit a flight with no Wi-Fi. It is a web game, and we advise a connection. We have not published an offline mode. If you want a long session with no network, The Sims 4 is the better choice, after the setup above.

For other games that need no install, read life sims you can play in your browser. For the difference between our game and The Sims, read LifeSim vs The Sims.

Do you need the internet every time you start The Sims 4?

No. The EA FAQ says that you need it to activate the game and to use online features. Once installed, you can play without it.

Do you need the EA app to play?

The EA FAQ says that you need the EA app and an EA Account to install and register the game. We found no statement on the EA app for each later session.

Does the Gallery work offline?

No. The Gallery shares content over the internet. Download what you need before you go offline.

Can you buy a pack offline?

No. Packs need the EA app and a download.

Is The Sims 4 single-player?

Yes. The Steam page lists “Single-player”. For the mods that add shared play, read does The Sims 4 have multiplayer.

We opened four pages on October 9, 2026: the EA FAQ, the EA game page, the EA app page, and the Steam store data. Every offline rule here comes from the EA FAQ.

We did not check these points.

  • How long the game runs offline before it asks for a connection again.
  • Whether the EA app offline mode, or the Steam offline mode, changes the result.
  • The offline rules on a console.
  • Error messages that players report. We could not open the EA help threads on them.

The EA app page does not mention an offline mode. If you play offline and an error appears, go online, start the game fully, and try again. This is our advice. It is not an EA instruction.
