Does The Sims 4 have multiplayer?

No. The Sims 4 is a single-player game. The Steam page lists “Single-player” as the only player mode. The EA page for the game names no multiplayer feature.

Players can add a fan-made multiplayer mod. EA does not make it. The studio also describes a different game, Project Rene, that has social play.

This post covers all three. We opened each source on October 6, 2026. You read this on the LifeSim blog. We make a browser life sim, and we say where our game does not fit.

The Steam page for The Sims 4 lists these features. We read the store data on October 6, 2026.

“Remote Play on Tablet” is not a multiplayer item. The list has no “Multi-player” item and no “Co-op” item.

The EA page for the game describes what you can do: make Sims, build homes, and travel between locations. It says that your Sims can hang out with friends, which means the Sims in your game. It adds that the Gallery lets you share creations. The page uses no word for multiplayer.

The Gallery is a place to share, not a place to play together. The EA page says that you can use the Gallery to find inspiration and to add content to your game. You can also share your own creations.

The same page says that you can download, like, and comment on Sims, homes, and fully designed rooms.

Your friend sees your house in the Gallery and puts it in their own game. Each of you plays your own copy. The two games do not meet.

Yes. The fan mod is called S4MP. It is not made by EA, and it is not part of the game. Two guides that we opened describe it.

What the guides say

• GGRecon says that the mod dates from 2019 and that its makers update it regularly. It lets you play as a Sim in a shared household with friends, online or on a local connection.
• SnootySims, in an article from November 2023, says that the mod works across platforms with up to 12 players. It also says that the mod joined the ModSquad in the collaboration between The Sims and CurseForge.
• SnootySims names a second client, SimSync. It says that the client joins PC players and Mac players. It advises no more than 8 players, which is the usual household limit.

What you must do, in short

GGRecon lists these steps:

1. Download the mod.
2. Move it to the Mods folder in Documents, in the folder Electronic Arts, in the folder The Sims 4.
3. Turn on script mods in the game settings.
4. Make sure that your save file matches the save file of your friends.

Both guides tell you to back up your saves before you try a mod. Follow this advice. A mod can change a save file in a way that you cannot undo.

What we could not confirm

The page of the mod on CurseForge and the Patreon page of the mod did not open for us. The home page of the mod did not give us text. We could not check the current version, the player limit, or which game patches it supports. The two guides are older than today, and one is from 2023. Check the page of the mod before you rely on any number here.

SnootySims says that the game was called “Project Olympus” in development and was meant to be an online multiplayer game. It says that EA changed its plan after mixed responses from testers and after the launch of SimCity.

We could not find a source from EA for this. Treat it as the claim of one site. It explains why fans ask for multiplayer, but we cannot confirm it.

Yes, but it is not The Sims 5. EA changed the description of Project Rene in its 2026 roadmap. Sims Community reproduces the roadmap, dated January 9, 2026.

The roadmap says that Project Rene “has evolved to focus on social multiplayer play”. It adds that this is “a more direct way for friends to share creativity together.” It says that Project Rene is “not the successor to The Sims 4”. It calls it “a separate experience” from any future deep single-player life simulation.

The roadmap heading calls the game a “social, collaborative, mobile-first life-sim game”. This is a change from the early plan. In 2023, the game director described it differently.

What the director said in 2023

80 Level, dated February 2, 2023, reports on a video from EA. The game director, Grant Rodiek, said that Project Rene “is not an MMO”. He said: “It is not this public, shared space where everything you do is always with other people.”

80 Level adds that you could build a house and customize it together with a friend. It also says that the game would work across PC and mobile.

What this means for you

Project Rene is not on sale as we write. We found no release date in the sources. Read Sims 5 release date for what EA has said about each Sims project.

We found no plan for it. The 2026 roadmap, as Sims Community reproduces it, says that EA is “committed to single-player life simulation experiences”. It says that EA will keep delivering content and updates for The Sims 4.

The roadmap also says that “single-player PC and console experiences will always be a part of our future”. It says that more than half of the global development team works on The Sims 4 and on the next evolution.

Social play goes to a separate product. This makes a multiplayer mode inside The Sims 4 less likely. This is our reading. EA has not said that it will never add one.

The dates below come from the sources that we opened. We list the source for each line.

The line from this table is simple. Fans solved multiplayer first. EA moved its own plan toward a separate product.

Four plain options need no mod. Each one has a cost.

1. Share a house or a Sim through the Gallery. Your friend plays their own copy.
2. Play on a video call. One player controls the game, and the other player watches and gives advice.
3. Take turns on one save file. You pass the controls at the end of each Sim day.
4. Set a shared goal, such as a household challenge. Each player keeps their own save and reports the result.

None of these puts two players in one world at the same time. For that, you need the mod. Read the warnings in the section on the mod before you start.

For other life sims, the answer is the same today. Paralives is single-player. inZOI is single-player, and its studio tests small online sessions. Read does Paralives have multiplayer and does inZOI have multiplayer.

Can you play The Sims 4 with friends online?

Not in the base game. A fan mod lets you. The Gallery lets you share creations.

Does The Sims 4 have co-op on console?

The Steam page lists single-player only. We did not check the console stores.

Is the S4MP mod safe?

We cannot say. We could not open the page of the mod. Download mods only from the page of the maker, and back up your saves.

Is the Sims 5 multiplayer?

The 2026 roadmap says that Project Rene is not the successor to The Sims 4. We found no announced name or date for a successor.
