The Sims 4 on Steam Deck

Valve rates The Sims 4 Playable on Steam Deck. See what the report says, how to install it, and how to make it run better.

Yes. Valve rates The Sims 4 as “Playable” on the Steam Deck. This is the middle rating. The game runs, and you must accept a few small problems with the controller and the text.

This post shows the Steam report, the player reports, and the steps to install the game. We opened each source on October 6, 2026.

You read this on the LifeSim blog. We make a browser life sim. We say where our game does not replace The Sims 4.

Steam shows a compatibility report for each game. We read the report for The Sims 4 on October 6, 2026. The Steam Deck rating is “Playable”.

The report lists seven notes. Each note names one point that Valve found.

  • The default controller setup does not fully work.
  • The controller symbols on screen do not match the Steam Deck.
  • Text input does not open the on-screen keyboard by itself.
  • The interface text is not legible.
  • The default configuration is performant.
  • The first-time setup needs an internet connection.
  • Single-player play needs an internet connection.

Only one note is good news: the default configuration is performant. The other six notes list limits that you must accept.

The “Interface text is not legible” note matters on a small screen. Many Sims 4 menus use small text. Plan to use the touch screen to read and select.

The Sims 4 is an older game, and the requirements are low. The Steam page lists June 18, 2020 as the date of the Steam release.

ItemMinimumRecommended
ProcessorIntel Core i3-3220 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5
Memory4 GB8 GB
Graphics128 MB of video memory, Pixel Shader 3.01 GB of video memory, GTX 650 or Radeon HD 7750
Free space (Steam page)26 GB51 GB

EA lists the same game with slightly different space numbers: at least 25 GB for the minimum, and at least 50 GB for the recommended list. Both lists add about 1 GB for saved games and custom content. The Steam page and the EA page do not agree exactly, so keep a margin.

The graphics cards in these lists are very old. Compare this with inZOI, which names an RTX 2060 as the minimum. The Sims 4 asks for much less.

We found no source on the size of each pack. Check your free space before you add packs.

ProtonDB collects reports from players who run Windows games on Linux and the Steam Deck. We read the summary for The Sims 4 on October 6, 2026. It lists 404 reports. This is the largest sample of the three life sims that we checked.

The overall tier is Gold. The best tier that a player reported is Platinum. The score is 0.66, and ProtonDB rates its confidence as strong.

Gold means that the game runs well after some changes. It does not mean that the game fails. The tier is a vote by players. It does not measure the frame rate.

Buy or claim the game on Steam, then install it from your Steam library. This is the simplest method, and it needs no desktop mode.

Method 1: the Steam version

  1. Find The Sims 4 in your Steam library on the Steam Deck.
  2. Choose Install, and wait for the download. Check that you have the free space that we list above.
  3. Start the game from Steam.
  4. Keep the network on the first time. The Steam report says that the first-time setup needs an internet connection.

The Steam page lists “In-App Purchases” for the game. Read is The Sims 4 free for what costs money.

Method 2: the EA app version

If you own the game in the EA app and not on Steam, you can still play it. Pi My Life Up describes the steps. The guide was updated on February 28, 2026. You switch to desktop mode, download the EA app, and run it through Proton.

This method takes longer. We found no Steam Deck guide from EA, so you depend on a third-party page. If you can choose, use the Steam version.

It did for a time, and the problem is solved. GamingOnLinux reported on January 23, 2023 that the change from Origin to the EA app had caused problems. These problems affected Linux desktops and the Steam Deck.

Valve then checked several EA games again. The Sims 4 was on the list. GamingOnLinux says that all of these games were marked as playable again, with Proton Experimental as the default compatibility tool.

That article is more than three years old. The report that we read today still shows “Playable”, so the result holds. Old guides may still describe the old problem. Ignore a guide that tells you to fix the EA app by hand, unless you have a current error.

Use Laptop Mode. EA describes it on its system requirements page. It improves the frame rate and makes the game run more efficiently, for longer battery life. EA names PCs and Macs, and laptops. EA does not name the Steam Deck, so this is our suggestion, and we did not measure it.

How to turn on Laptop Mode

  1. Open the game and click the three dots in the game.
  2. Choose Game Options.
  3. Check the box next to Laptop Mode.

What about Memory Boost?

EA describes Memory Boost as an opt-in feature that reduces lag and crashes. EA says that it is in the Early Access phase and that it is available on PC only. The Steam Deck runs Linux, so we do not know whether it applies. We found no source that says so. Do not rely on it.

What about mods and custom content?

We found no source on mods for The Sims 4 on a Steam Deck. A mod adds data and can add load. If you add mods, add a few at a time and check the game after each one. Read Sims 4 mods for the general steps.

EA lists the internet need in its system requirements. For the PC version, it says that an internet connection is “required for game activation and optional for game updates”. For the Mac version, it says that a connection is required for product activation.

The Steam report adds two notes. The first-time setup needs an internet connection, and single-player play needs an internet connection. The notes are stricter than the EA text. Follow the Steam notes on a Steam Deck.

We found no source on what happens with no network after the first setup. Do not assume that it works. Check it at home, with the network off, before you travel.

The Steam page lists several features that suit a handheld. We list the ones that apply.

  • “Save Anytime”: you can save at any point and stop when the battery is low.
  • “Playable without Timed Input”: the game never needs a quick reaction.
  • “Mouse Only Option”: you can play with a pointer alone, so the touch screen and the trackpad are enough.

The Steam page does not list Steam Cloud for The Sims 4. We found no source on how saves move between devices for this game. Back up your save files by hand if you play on two devices.

Use the trackpads as a mouse. The Steam page lists “Mouse Only Option” and no controller support. The Steam report says the default controller setup does not fully work.

The Sims 4 was made for a mouse and a keyboard. Build Mode uses many small clicks. Buy Mode and Create a Sim use many menus.

The touch screen helps here. Tap an item to select it. Use the trackpad for the camera and for placing objects. We found no published layout from EA that we could open. Adjust the Steam Input layout to your own habit.

EA also lists “keyboard and mouse, or touchpad” as the input for the PC version. The trackpad counts as a touchpad.

Valve rates only one of the big three as playable. Use the table to compare them. All three ratings come from the Steam reports that we read on October 6, 2026.

GameValve ratingProtonDB tierNeeds a network
The Sims 4PlayableGold, 404 reportsYes, for setup and play
inZOIUnsupportedGold, 135 reportsYes, for setup and play
ParalivesUnsupportedPlatinum, 95 reportsNo, per the FAQ

The Sims 4 has the best rating from Valve. It is also the game with the most content, because it has had a long run of packs. Read inZOI on Steam Deck and Paralives on Steam Deck for the other two.

A browser life sim is a fourth option. LifeSim needs no install, no launcher, and no sign-in with a publisher. It is not a house builder like The Sims 4. It is a life with talking people on a real map. Read games like The Sims to choose.

Is The Sims 4 Steam Deck Verified?

No. Valve rates it “Playable” on October 6, 2026.

Can you play The Sims 4 offline on a Steam Deck?

The Steam report says that the first-time setup and single-player play need an internet connection. Plan to be online.

Does the Steam Deck run The Sims 4 with all the packs?

We found no source on this. The base game has low requirements. Each pack adds data, so check your free space.

Is there a Mac version on Steam?

No. The Steam store lists Windows only. EA lists a Mac version in the EA app. Read The Sims 4 on a Mac.

Can I use cheats on a Steam Deck?

Cheats need a text box. Read Sims 4 cheats. Open the on-screen keyboard by hand, because it does not open by itself.
