Better Exceptions for The Sims 4

Better Exceptions by TwistedMexi finds the mod that breaks your Sims 4 game. Get v3.17, install it, read its reports, and use it with T.O.O.L.

Better Exceptions (BE) is a free script mod for The Sims 4 on PC and Mac. A modder called TwistedMexi makes it. When the game has an error, BE writes a clear report in your browser. Often it names the mod file that caused the error.

Download it from twistedmexi.com, which links to the free post on TwistedMexi's Patreon. The current public version is v3.17, from June 19, 2026. When we checked on October 15, 2026, the site listed it as “Updated & Working.”

Mods do not work on PlayStation or Xbox. For mods in general, read our guide to Sims 4 mods.

StepWhat to do
1Go to twistedmexi.com, open the Mods list, and click Download next to Better Exceptions. The zip file has a name like TwistedMexi's Better Exceptions v3.17 Official.zip.
2Open the zip. Drag tmex-BetterExceptions.ts4script into Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods.
3Do not open or unzip the .ts4script file. On Mac, the download can take it out of the zip for you.
4Start the game. Open Game Options, then Other. Turn on “Enable Custom Content and Mods” and “Script Mods Allowed.”
5Close the game and start it again. Load a household.

When you load a household, BE shows a welcome notification. If you see it, the install worked. The notification also opens the BE menu.

The game writes errors to a file called lastException.txt. That file is hard to read. BE reads it, compares it to your mods, and opens a report in your browser. If the report does not open, try a browser other than Edge. TwistedMexi says Edge has a bug with local files.

  • Possible Cause: the file that BE thinks caused the error. Look at this first.
  • Confidence: a percentage next to the Possible Cause. At 90% to 100%, removing that file usually fixes the problem. At a lower value, check every file that the report lists.
  • Lists of files: the report also lists script mods, tuning mods, broken CC, duplicate files, and missing packs.
  • Animation errors: BE shows only a notification for these, because you can usually ignore them. The notification has a button to scan anyway.

To fix the problem, do these steps:

  1. Find the file from the Possible Cause in your Mods folder.
  2. Remove the whole mod, not only that one file. Then install a new version if the creator has one.
  3. For duplicates, delete both copies. Then install one copy again.
  4. Start the game again and check if the error comes back.

If the error stays after you remove all mods, it is likely a bug in the game. BE cannot fix those.

  • Patch Day scan: it runs when a new game version installs, and when you first install BE. It shows mods that are not compatible with the new patch and have a high risk. Start there when a patch breaks your game.
  • UI reports: for UI errors, such as empty boxes or strange menu images. BE tries to find the UI mod that causes it. If it cannot, it lists all your UI mods. The BE menu also has “Locate All UI Mods.”
  • Check for Conflicts: in the BE menu. It shows only conflicts that change your game in a bad way. The scan can take several minutes.
  • Locate Outfit CC: turn on testingcheats true, Shift-click a Sim, and choose “BetterExceptions: Locate Outfit CC.” You get a list of the CC files in that outfit, with their folder paths.

BE finds problems. TwistedMexi's other mods add features. They are separate downloads on the same mods list.

  • T.O.O.L. (Takes Objects Off Lot): move and rotate objects with exact numbers, also off the lot. The current version is v3.2.
  • Better BuildBuy: sorts the debug objects and adds better filters and favorites to the catalog.
  • Always Testing: keeps testingcheats true on. This helps with the Locate Outfit CC tool.
  • All Cheats: turns on the game cheats that EA disabled in the Seasons patch.

BE also finds mods from other creators. For example, players on weerbesu's Patreon wrote that BE flagged an old UI Cheats Extension after the July 2026 patch. For more mods that players like, read the best Sims 4 mods.

Players install BE because a big mod folder breaks often. LifeSim is a free life sim in your browser set on a real map of Earth, where people talk back in your own words. It has no mods, so there is nothing to fix after a patch. It is a different kind of game, not a replacement for The Sims 4. Read more on life simulators.

Is Better Exceptions free?

Yes. The public version is free on Patreon. Patreon members get early test versions.

Does Better Exceptions fix broken mods?

No. It finds them. You remove or update the mod yourself.

Can Better Exceptions be wrong?

Yes. A low confidence value means that BE is not sure. Check every file on the list before you delete anything.

Can I use Better Exceptions on PlayStation or Xbox?

No. The console versions do not load mods. Use the normal Sims 4 cheats instead.
