Life in Rotterdam

Rotterdam sits along the Nieuwe Maas river in South Holland and has Europe's largest seaport. After World War II bombings destroyed the old core, the city rebuilt with wide boulevards and modern skyscrapers. Daily life is fast-paced and practical, with residents cycling on red-asphalt bike lanes in all weather.

Where to live in Rotterdam

Centrum

Residents live in modern high-rise apartments above the Lijnbaan shopping street, outdoor markets, and Rotterdam Centraal station.

Kralingen

University students and families share tree-lined streets next to the Kralingse Bos park and lake.

Kop van Zuid

Professionals live in waterfront skyscrapers on a former pier and cross the river via the Erasmus Bridge.

Delfshaven

Locals live among historic canalside buildings that survived World War II and a rebuilt windmill, near multicultural bakeries.

Katendrecht

Once a sailors' quarter, residents now spend evenings at independent theaters, craft breweries, and culinary plazas.

A sample life: a newcomer's first month

Bram, 26, moves to a cheaper flat in Charlois on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas river. He writes two goals on his list: make local friends and visit the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen.

In his first week, Bram searches the 3D map for a cafe near the Erasmusbrug and walks there. He orders a black coffee, which locals call a bakkie pleur, and chats with a neighbor in his own words. The neighbor remembers this talk the next day and sends Bram a text message.

In week three, a birthday drinks event appears on the map at the Oude Haven. Bram goes to the event, meets two coworkers, and plans a weekend outing to Diergaarde Blijdorp.

Seasons and weather on the Nieuwe Maas

Rotterdam has a temperate oceanic climate shaped by the nearby North Sea. A constant breeze blows along the river, and the skies change fast. The 3D map in LifeSim shows the weather as you walk through the streets.

In spring and summer, the days are mild or warm with long daylight hours and sudden rain showers. This is a good time to plan an outing with friends to Het Park near the Euromast. In autumn and winter, heavy wind gusts and cold gray skies hit the high-rise streets.

Neighborhoods for students, families, and artists

Living in Rotterdam is generally more affordable than in Amsterdam, though the central districts have high demand. Wealthy families often live in Hillegersberg or in the stately townhouses of Kralingen. University students from Erasmus University Rotterdam also rent rooms in Kralingen near the park.

Artists and design students from the Willem de Kooning Academy often pick mid-range areas like Delfshaven or Oude Noorden. Newcomers on a budget look south of the river in Rotterdam-Zuid, in districts like Feijenoord, IJsselmonde, and Afrikaanderwijk. You can set your home in any neighborhood by writing it in your character description.

Work at the port and in the city

The city is home to the Port of Rotterdam, which is the largest seaport in Europe. Major employers include the Port of Rotterdam Authority, global shipping companies like Maersk, Shell, Unilever, and Erasmus MC. Many residents work as marine engineers, supply chain coordinators, medical researchers, and architects.

To start a career in LifeSim, write your job into your text prompt when you make your character. You can be a customs operative at the docks or a software developer in Kop van Zuid. LifeSim does not have a salary system or job performance scores, so your work life focuses on your coworkers.

Food, markets, and going out in 010

Residents proudly call their city 010 after its telephone area code. When you go out in the game, you can search the map for the Markthal or the Binnenrotte open-air market. Over in Katendrecht, locals visit the Fenix Food Factory or walk past the moored SS Rotterdam.

For late-night bars and art galleries, search for Witte de Withstraat and walk there with a group. You can talk with friends about local dishes like kapsalon, bitterballen, stroopwafels, and raw Hollandse Nieuwe herring. In real life, Dutch friends speak plainly and split the bill evenly after a meal.
