A young barber taking over a Harlem shopHow to play a barber in LifeSim
- Write your barber's name, age, city, and shop style in the character box.
- Use place search on the 3D map to find a real street, barbershop, or café in your city.
- Talk to clients and coworkers in your own words in person or by text message.
- Set daily to-do items and plan after-work outings with your regulars and friends.
A sample life: taking over a Harlem chair
Marcus, 24, takes over his retiring grandfather's neighborhood shop in Harlem, New York City. He sets a life goal to keep the older Tuesday regulars while bringing in younger clients. On Saturday morning, he adds "check clippers and sweep up" to his daily to-do list.
He walks to the shop's block on the 3D map and talks with a longtime regular outside. They discuss a lineup and how the neighborhood has changed, and the client remembers this chat next week. That evening, a friend texts Marcus to join a birthday outing at a local café.
What a barber life looks like in LifeSim
You play a barber day by day in a real city. There are no haircut mini-games and no shop interiors. Instead, the barbershop works as a community hub where you build friendships with regulars in your own words.
Your clients, coworkers, and boss have their own routines, goals, and memories. If two rival clients tell you the same secret, you decide what to say to each of them. Your cash changes with your activities and chats, and your character ages through life stages over the years.
The real job of a barber
Real barbers consult with clients, drape them with a cape, and cut hair using electric clippers, shears, and guards. They cut fades, tapers, and crisp lineups, perform hot-towel straight-razor shaves, and clean tools in blue Barbicide disinfectant. The work brings sore feet, back pain, and tiny hair splinters, especially during busy Saturday shifts.
Training rules depend on the country. Every US state requires barber school or an apprenticeship, plus licensing exams covering sanitation. In Japan, the Riyoshi Law states that only a licensed barber can shave a client's face with a razor. In the UK, most barbers earn an NVQ diploma at a college or the London School of Barbering.
Prompts that work for a barber character
Describe your character in one text box with a name, an age, a city, and a situation. Write "Tariq, 19, a nervous barber apprentice in London, UK, working his first busy Saturday shift." You can also try "Elena, 31, a barber in Austin, USA, who rents a chair near South Congress."
For drama, write "Kenji, 28, a barber in Tokyo, Japan, whose two regular clients are bitter business rivals." Once the game starts, you can edit the cast to add a strict shop owner or a regular client.
Real cities with famous barbershop scenes
London is home to historic shops in St. James's like Truefitt & Hill, alongside trendy parlors in Soho and Shoreditch. New York City features corner barbershops in Harlem, Brooklyn, and Queens, plus craft chains like Fellow Barber. In Rotterdam, the barbershop Schorem is famous for classic pompadours, flat tops, and the Old School Barber Academy.
In Tokyo, traditional tokoya offer razor work and head massages alongside modern shops like MR. BROTHERS CUT CLUB. Istanbul is known for the Turkish berber experience, which adds neck massages and face threading to a shave. In Austin, shops like Birds Barbershop and Avenue Barber Shop on South Congress mix haircuts with local culture.
