Life in Saint Petersburg

Locals call the city Piter, and daily life moves at an artistic, unhurried pace along the Neva River delta. In warm months, people walk along granite embankments and through historic inner courtyards. During the long, dark winters, life centers around coffee shops, bakeries, theaters, and live music venues.

Where to live in Saint Petersburg

Tsentralny District

Grand 19th-century apartment buildings, hidden courtyards, and busy avenues with museums, cafes, and bars.

Petrogradsky District

An island neighborhood with ornate Art Nouveau buildings, quiet tree-lined streets, and green parks.

Vasileostrovsky District

A student and academic area on Vasilyevsky Island with numbered street lines and breezy waterfront parks.

Moskovsky District

Monumental mid-century apartment blocks, wide boulevards, and large green squares south of the center.

Primorsky District

A modern residential area in the northwest with high-rise flats, shopping malls, and Gulf of Finland views.

Food and going out in Saint Petersburg

Local food in Piter has its own vocabulary. You eat hot sugar-dusted ring donuts called pyshki with sweet milky coffee, or buy a shaverma wrap. Classic dishes include pelmeni, borscht, and Beef Stroganoff, which started in the city. In spring, people eat koryushka, small fried fish from the Neva River that smell like fresh cucumbers.

Residents buy produce, sour cream, honey, and pickles at Kuznechny Market and Sytny Market. For modern food halls, you can search the map for Vasileostrovsky Market or Vokzal 1853 in an old railway station. When going out at night, people head to the bars and restaurants on Rubinstein Street, Nekrasova Street, and Zhukovskogo Street.

In LifeSim, you can plan an outing with friends to New Holland Island or Sevkabel Port on the bay. You pick the spot on the 3D map, walk there together, and talk as a group in your own words.

A sample life: a programmer on Vasilyevsky Island

Alex, 25, starts a new life as a software developer in Vasileostrovsky District. Alex sets two life goals: make close friends in the city and visit the Summer Garden.

In week one, Alex searches the map for a bakery near the numbered street lines to meet a neighbor. They talk about the cold morning and the neighbor remembers the chat the next day. On Wednesday, a coworker texts Alex and invites Alex to a bar on Rubinstein Street.

On the weekend, a house party happening appears on the map in Petrogradsky District. Alex goes to the party, meets two students from ITMO University, and starts a group text thread. Each day ends with a recap of these moments, and Alex's cast of friends grows.

Money and the cost of living in Piter

In the real city, the highest living costs are in the historic Golden Triangle of Tsentralny District and along the canals. The leafy Petrogradsky District and luxury developments on Krestovsky and Kamenny Islands are also expensive. Vasileostrovsky, Moskovsky, and parts of Admiralteysky sit in the middle range.

The cheapest apartments are in outer residential suburbs at the ends of the metro lines. Many families and young workers live in high-rise tower blocks in Parnas, Murino, Kudrovo, and Kupchino. LifeSim does not charge rent or pay a salary, and instead your cash changes through your daily activities and chats.

Seasons, weather, and the White Nights

Weather shapes life on the Neva River delta. Winter runs from late November through March with short daylight, overcast skies, snow, and frozen canals. During these dark months, people spend time in coffee shops, theaters, and live music venues.

In April, the river ice breaks up, and parks bloom in May. Summer brings mild weather and the White Nights from late May to mid-July, when twilight lasts all night. After yellow leaves in September, October and November bring cold wind and heavy rain, which all show on the 3D map.
