What is the debug cheat in The Sims 4?
The “debug cheat” is two build cheats: bb.showhiddenobjects and bb.showliveeditobjects. They add hidden objects to the Build Mode catalog. Then type “debug” in the Build Mode search bar to find them.
Players call it the debug cheat because many of these objects have the name “DEBUG”. Most of them are decoration. Your Sims cannot use them.
Which codes do you type?
| Code | What it does |
|---|---|
bb.showhiddenobjects | Shows hidden objects in the Build and Buy catalog, such as items from in-game events that ended. |
bb.showliveeditobjects | Shows the objects that the game uses to decorate the world: rocks, trees, statues, street signs, fences, and benches. |
bb.moveobjects on | Optional. Lets you place objects anywhere. It helps with large world objects. |
Type bb.showhiddenobjects first, then bb.showliveeditobjects. GamesRadar+ says that the second code needs the first. Press Enter after each code.
How do you open the cheat console?
| Platform | Keys |
|---|---|
| PC | Ctrl + Shift + C |
| Mac | Ctrl + Shift + C (EA lists the same keys for Mac) |
| PlayStation | Hold L1 + L2 + R1 + R2 together |
| Xbox | Hold LB + LT + RB + RT together |
A box opens at the top of the screen. Press Esc, or the four shoulder buttons again, to close it. For all other codes, read our list of Sims 4 cheats.
Do you need testingcheats for the debug cheat?
EA says no. Its cheat page says that the Build Mode cheats do not need testingcheats true. Some guides tell you to type it first anyway. On a PC, it does no harm.
On a console, it is important. EA says that a cheat that needs testingcheats true turns off achievements and trophies in that save. Build Mode cheats do not turn them off. So on a console, type only the two bb codes. Skip testingcheats true if you want your trophies.
How do you find the debug objects in Build Mode?
- Load a lot and enter Build Mode.
- Open the cheat console and type the two codes.
- Close the console.
- Click the search bar in the Build Mode catalog. Type
debugand press Enter. - Scroll the results. Place an object like any other object.
Many objects have only the name “DEBUG”, so the list is not in order. You can also search for the name of an object, such as a plant or a food.
What do the debug objects unlock?
- Clutter: dirty laundry, pans, paint brushes, plants, seeds, and plates of food.
- World decoration: rocks, bushes, trees, statues, traffic signs, lamp posts, fences, and park benches.
- Event items: objects from events that ended.
These objects are for looks only. A Sim cannot sit on a debug bench. Use a normal bench from the catalog for that. Many objects also have no color options.
Career reward items need a different code: bb.ignoregameplayunlocksentitlement. Read Sims 4 career cheats for that.
Why does the debug cheat not work?
- Nothing shows for “debug”: check the spelling. The code has a dot after “bb” and no spaces. Type
bb.showhiddenobjectsagain. - World objects are missing: type
bb.showhiddenobjectsbeforebb.showliveeditobjects. - Sims walk through an object: most debug objects do not block Sims. Do not use them as walls or fences that must stop Sims.
- Food disappears: placed food often leaves only the plate or cup. Sims Community reports this.
- A baking tray will not delete: Sims Community says that some trays cannot be clicked after you place them. Save before you place one.
- You cannot copy an object: save a room with your debug objects to your Library. Then place the room again.
To skip the search, look in the Gallery for “debug clutter” or “debug cars”. Other players upload rooms full of these objects.
Where does LifeSim fit?
LifeSim is a free life sim in your browser set on a real map of Earth, where people talk back in your own words. It has no Build Mode like The Sims 4, so it is not for decorators. If you want a different kind of life sim, read games like The Sims or more on life simulators.
