How to rotate items in The Sims 4

Pick up the item in Build Mode. On a PC or a Mac, press the period key to turn it clockwise, or the comma key to turn it counter-clockwise. Each press turns the item 45 degrees. On a console, use the shoulder buttons.

These controls come from the EA Help page on rotation. Rotation is part of the base game. You do not need a pack. To see what the packs add, read Sims 4 expansion packs.

1. Open Build Mode.
2. Select the object that you want to place.
3. Press . (period) to turn it clockwise, or , (comma) to turn it counter-clockwise. Or right-click, once for each 45-degree turn.
4. Left-click to place the object.

You can also rotate an object that is already in the room. Click it to pick it up, and then use the same keys.

The keys are the same as on a PC. Select the object in Build Mode. Press the period key to turn it clockwise, or the comma key to turn it counter-clockwise. Click the left mouse button to place it.

On Xbox, open Build Mode and select the object. Press RB to turn it clockwise, or LB to turn it counter-clockwise. Let go when the object faces the right way.

On PlayStation, press R1 to turn the object clockwise. The sources do not agree on the counter-clockwise button. The EA Help page says R2. A guide on GGRecon and players on the EA forums say L1, which matches LB on Xbox. Try L1 first. If it does not work, try R2.

Free rotation turns an object to any angle, not only in steps of 45 degrees. EA says that it works only with the mouse, not with the keys.

1. Open Build Mode and select the object.
2. Hold the left mouse button on the object.
3. Hold the Alt key, and move the mouse to turn the object.
4. Let go of the mouse button when the object faces the right way.

Alt also lets you place an object off the grid. On PlayStation, hold L1 and R1 and turn the right stick. On Xbox, hold LB and RB and turn the right stick.

The cheat bb.moveobjects on removes the placement limits. Objects can then overlap, and they do not snap to the grid. Use it with free rotation to place an item at any angle and in any spot.

1. Open the cheat box. On PC and Mac, press Ctrl + Shift + C. On PlayStation, press L1, L2, R1, and R2 together. On Xbox, press LB, LT, RB, and RT together.
2. Type testingcheats true and press Enter.
3. Type bb.moveobjects on and press Enter.

• You are in Live Mode. The EA steps all start in Build Mode. Open Build Mode first.
• The Sims 3 Camera is on. EA says that this setting changes the controls. Hold the left mouse button on the object, and then move the mouse or press the comma and period keys. Players on the EA forums fixed it with Ctrl + Shift + Tab, which switches the camera mode.
• You used the keys for free rotation. Free rotation works only with the mouse and Alt.
• The object will not fit. A red outline means that the spot is blocked. Turn on bb.moveobjects on, or move the object to a clear spot first.
• Mods. Old mods can break Build Mode after an update. Test in a game with no mods. Our guide to Sims 4 mods shows how to turn them off.

How many degrees does one press turn an object?

45 degrees. Eight presses turn the object all the way round.

Can I rotate an object to any angle?

Yes. Hold the left mouse button and Alt, and move the mouse. On a console, hold both bumpers and turn the right stick.

Does rotating need cheats?

No. The keys and buttons work in the base game. Only overlap and off-grid placement in tight spots need bb.moveobjects on.
