What is The Sims 4 Get to Work expansion pack?
Get to Work is the first expansion pack for The Sims 4. It came out in March 2015. It adds three careers where you follow your Sim to work: doctor, detective, and scientist. It also lets your Sims run their own shops.
We opened the EA page of the pack and the Steam page on October 14, 2026. The facts below come from these pages, unless we name another source. We did not play the pack for this post.

The EA page gives March 30, 2015. Wikipedia gives March 31, 2015 for North America and April 2 for Europe. The console date comes from a Sims Community report of the EA news.
What do the active careers do?
In most careers, your Sim leaves the lot and you wait. In these three careers, you go to work with your Sim. You do the tasks of the job, and the tasks move your Sim toward a promotion. The EA page says that you decide if your Sim gets a promotion or becomes “the workplace menace.”
- Doctor: treat patients, deliver babies, and do emergency surgery.
- Detective: look at crime scenes and solve cases.
- Scientist: make strange inventions in a lab.

How do retail businesses work?
Your Sim can buy a lot and open a shop. The Steam page names bakeries, clothing stores, art galleries, and bookstores. You build the shop in Build Mode. Then you choose what to sell, hire staff, and talk to customers to make a sale.
The two new skills feed the shop. With Baking, a Sim makes cakes and treats. With Photography, a Sim takes photos. You can put both at home or sell them.
What are aliens and Sixam?
Get to Work adds aliens. You can make one in Create-a-Sim, or meet one in the world. Wikipedia says that aliens can hide in a human disguise, read the personality of other Sims, and erase memories. They can also take Sims away to space.
Sixam is a hidden alien world. Its name is “Maxis” spelled backward. A Sim at level 10 of the scientist career can build a wormhole generator, which takes the Sim to Sixam. Two sources state this: Wikipedia and Snooty Sims.
What is Magnolia Promenade?
Magnolia Promenade is the new area of the pack. It is not a full world. It has four lots. Three lots have shops already built. One lot is empty, so that you can build your own business.
If you want a large new town, this pack does not give you one. Your Sims can still live in the worlds that you own.
Is Get to Work worth it?
This part is our opinion, from the store pages. The pack is worth it if you like to play the work day of a Sim. It gives you three careers that you play on the job. It is also good if you want to run a shop.
It is a weaker choice if you want a big new world or changes to every household. For that, look at Seasons. The pack is from 2015, and it costs the same as newer packs. Wait for a sale if the price matters. Compare all the packs in Sims 4 expansion packs.
What mistakes do new owners make?
- They look for a new world. The pack adds only four lots and Sixam.
- They expect every career to be active. The pack makes only three careers active: doctor, detective, and scientist.
- They forget the update. The EA page says that the pack needs the base game and all game updates.

Where does LifeSim fit?
LifeSim is a free life sim in your browser set on a real map of Earth, where people talk back in your own words. It is not a Sims pack, and it has no shops to build. If you want a different kind of life game, read games like The Sims or try the life simulator.
