What causes Filthy and how long it lasts

Your Sim gets the standard Uncomfortable Filthy moodlet when their Hygiene need sits between -100 and -99. Needs in the game run from -100 when empty to 100 when full. Hygiene drains at 0.0694 per Sim minute until it hits this low band.

Age and personality traits swap the standard Uncomfortable version for other emotions. Toddlers get a Sad version with a weight of 2, while Wild Toddlers get an Angry version instead. Infants get a Sad version with a weight of 1, which the Intense trait replaces with an Angry version.

None of the 4 versions use a countdown timer. The moodlet lasts as long as your Sim's Hygiene remains at the bottom of the bar.

How to remove or avoid the Filthy moodlet

Because Filthy only shows when Hygiene sits between -100 and -99, raising Hygiene above -99 removes it. You can avoid the moodlet by watching the Hygiene bar as it drains at 0.0694 per Sim minute.
