How to get married in The Sims 4

Marry at City Hall or plan a full wedding with My Wedding Stories. Steps, roles, items, and what we could not verify.

Your Sim must be engaged first. The base game also lets an engaged couple marry. We opened no page that gives those base game steps. The My Wedding Stories game pack adds two more ways: a fast marriage at City Hall, and a full wedding event on the calendar.

We opened three pages for this post. All three cover My Wedding Stories. None of them explains how a Sim proposes. We list that gap at the end. You read this on the LifeSim blog. We make a browser life sim, and we say where our game does not fit.

This is the fastest way. Sims Community gives these steps:

  1. Take an engaged Sim to City Hall between 9am and 6pm.
  2. Click City Hall and choose Get Married to the name of the partner.
  3. The couple goes inside for a short time. Then they come out together.
  4. They share a first kiss as a married couple. A dove and confetti show on the screen.

The page says City Hall is in Porto Luminoso, in the world of Tartosa. It is a tall, narrow building that faces away from the beach. TheGamer also says that a couple can elope at the Tartosa town hall. The page from Sims Community gives no cost for this way.

Your Sim must be engaged or married to plan a wedding event. A vow renewal needs a marriage. TheGamer gives this order:

  1. Open the calendar and select a day.
  2. Click the plus next to Add Wedding Event.
  3. Choose one of seven event types.
  4. Build the guest list. Pick the roles: Sim of Honor, Officiant, Flower Pal, and Ring Bearer.
  5. Select the activities. Some need items, such as a banquet table, a bar, a tea set, a wedding cake, an arch, an aisle, or a dance floor.
  6. Set the outfits, the cake, the dress code, and the colors. You can change them until about an hour before the event.
  7. Choose the venue and the start time.

Venues are a home lot, a wedding venue, a park, or a beach. An engaged couple cannot plan a vow renewal. A married couple cannot plan an engagement event or a Wedding Ceremony.

The roles only appear for Sims that you asked in the game and that said yes. Ask them first, or the role stays empty.

TheGamer says the fountain in Porto Luminoso sells wedding cakes and bouquets. You can also make them. A Sim with the Flower Arranging skill can make a bouquet. A Sim with gourmet cooking can bake a cake.

Most activity items are in Build/Buy. Some items come only from play. The page does not say which ones. Look at the activity list in the planner, and it shows what is missing.

Snooty Sims gives tips for a wedding party. We list them as the page states them.

  • Decorate the venue with flowers, balloons, and banners. You can use a park or a pre-made venue from the Gallery.
  • For a traditional wedding, invite up to 16 guests. Hire a caterer and a mixologist. Hire an entertainer if you can.
  • Make the wedding a goaled event if you want challenges and rewards. This is optional.
  • Use a Sim with the Photography skill at level 5 as the event photographer. Give the Sim the best camera that you can buy.
  • Avoid a cheap stove or a fireplace. They can start a fire at the party.

The page says that finished party tasks can earn a Bronze, Silver, or Gold reward.

You need a couple that is engaged. For City Hall and the wedding planner, you also need My Wedding Stories. The base game does not need the pack to marry, but we did not find a page that gives the base game steps or the proposal steps.

For the relationship settings that affect romance, read our guide to Sims 4 romance and attraction settings. If a baby is the next step, read how to have a baby in The Sims 4.

We do not have a wedding planner, a calendar of events, or a City Hall menu. This is a place where LifeSim does not fit. In LifeSim, you live one life in a real city. You talk to people in your own words, and they remember what you said.

If you want to plan a wedding with a cake and a dress code, stay with The Sims 4. If you want a relationship that grows from talk, read how LifeSim works. The full comparison is in LifeSim vs The Sims.

  • How a Sim proposes in the base game. None of the three pages we opened covers it.
  • The cost of a wedding. No page gives a price for the proposal, the venue, or the items.
  • The base game steps to marry without My Wedding Stories. The pages we opened all cover the pack.
  • Changes since 2024. The newest page is from August 2024.
