Games to play when bored

Bored? Here are free and cheap games to play for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or a whole evening, on your phone, in a browser, or on a PC.

Pick by how much time you have. For 5 minutes, try Wordle or a quick game on Chess.com. For a whole evening, try Stardew Valley or a life sim like LifeSim.

Below, the games are sorted by time first, then by where you are: on a phone, in a browser, or on a PC. Every game here is free or cheap. We checked each one on its official page or store page on October 11, 2026.

We make LifeSim, so it is on this list. We put it only where it fits.

Wordle

You guess a 5-letter word in 6 tries. It is in the New York Times Games app, which is free to download. The app also sells subscriptions for its other puzzles.

A fast game on Chess.com

Chess.com says you can join for free and play unlimited fast games. You pick the clock: 5, 3, or even 1 minute. One game fits in a short break.

The GeoGuessr Daily Challenge

GeoGuessr drops you on a street somewhere in the world, and you guess where you are on a map. The Daily Challenge is 5 places that change each day. You need to sign up, but you don’t need a subscription for it.

A few years in BitLife

BitLife is a text life sim on your phone. You tap to age a year and pick what your character does. It is free on the App Store and Google Play, with in-app purchases.

A whole life in Echoes

Echoes is a free text life sim that runs in your browser. You go from birth to death in six life stages. The page says one life takes 10 to 20 minutes, and there are no ads and no store.

A small town in Townscaper

You tap to place colored blocks, and the game turns them into houses, arches, stairs, and bridges. There is no goal. It calls itself “more of a toy than a game.” It costs $5.99 on Steam and $4.99 on the App Store.

Stardew Valley

You take over your grandfather’s old farm. You plant crops, raise animals, fish, explore caves, and make friends in town. It costs $14.99 on Steam, and you can play online with up to 7 friends. It is also on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iPhone, and Android.

Balatro

A card game built on poker hands. You add Joker cards that change the rules, and try to beat each round. It costs $14.99 on Steam for Windows and Mac.

LifeSim

LifeSim is free and runs in your browser, on a computer or a phone. You describe a person in one line, pick any city on Earth, and start living. The people there have jobs, homes, and friends. You talk to them by typing, and they remember what you said. The next evening, your life is where you left it.

Then stick to games that run in a browser tab. From this list, that is Chess.com, GeoGuessr, Echoes, and LifeSim. LifeSim also lets you play as a guest, with no account.

For more like that, read life sims you can play in your browser.

Try a different kind of game, not just a new one. If you always play fast phone games, try something slow, like Stardew Valley or Townscaper. If you’ve lived a hundred BitLife lives, try a life that doesn’t end in twenty minutes.

That is what LifeSim is for. You live one life in a real city, a day at a time. Nothing is a random event from a list. What happens comes from the people you meet. For more games in that style, read games like BitLife and games like Stardew Valley.
