What does NPC mean?
NPC means non-player character. It is a character in a game that the player does not control. In a video game, the computer controls it. In a tabletop role-playing game, the game master controls it.
Online, people also use NPC as slang for a person. To call someone an NPC is to say that they seem to follow a script and do not think for themselves. It is usually an insult.
| Where | What NPC means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Tabletop role-playing games | A character that the game master plays, not one of the players | A hired helper or an innkeeper in Dungeons & Dragons |
| Video games | A character that the computer controls, often with set lines and actions | A shopkeeper, a quest giver, or a villager |
| Online slang | A person who seems to repeat what others say, without their own thoughts | "He just says what everyone says. Total NPC." |
Where does the term NPC come from?
The term comes from tabletop role-playing games. Dungeons & Dragons came out in 1974 as three booklets. According to The Strong National Museum of Play, the first booklet already named a group of characters "non-player characters." These were mostly adventurers that the players could hire to join their party.
In those games, the players control their own heroes, the player characters, or PCs. The referee, later called the Dungeon Master, plays everyone else. Dictionary.com still gives this as the first meaning: a character in a tabletop game that the game master controls.
Role-playing video games took the term with them. Dictionary.com gives the second meaning as a video game character that plays a scripted role and that the player does not control. Cambridge Dictionary gives a similar meaning, and spells it out as "non-playable character". Both forms are common.
What do NPCs do in games?
NPCs fill the world around the player. They sell items, give quests, tell you where to go, fight you, or help you. Some only stand in the background so that a town feels full.
- Akalabeth (1979). Lord British is an early video game NPC. His main job is to send you on your quest.
- Ultima V (1988). The Museum of Play notes that its NPCs follow a daily plan. They work in the morning, and the city gates close at night.
- Baldur's Gate (1998). BioWare wanted its characters to feel like real people with their own lives.
- Animal Crossing. The animal villagers are the main NPCs of the series. They live in your town, have hobbies, and become your friends over time.
Most NPCs work from a script. They say set lines and react to set triggers. Talk to the same one twice, and you often hear the same words again. That repeat is the root of the slang meaning.
What does NPC mean in slang?
In slang, an NPC is a person who seems to have no thoughts of their own. They seem to repeat the same lines, like a game character on a loop. Mental Floss describes it as an insult for someone who seems unoriginal or not important.
The insult is older than the meme. Mental Floss and Wikipedia trace its use for real people to online groups around 2010. In 2016, a post on the website 4chan asked "Are you an NPC?" and described people who follow the crowd.
The slang spread widely in 2018. A gray, blank-faced cartoon face, the "NPC Wojak", came to stand for the idea. In October 2018, The New York Times called NPC a favorite insult of the pro-Trump internet. Around that time, Twitter suspended about 1,500 accounts that posed as NPCs, the Times reported.
What is NPC streaming on TikTok?
NPC streaming is a kind of live stream where the creator acts like a game character. Viewers send paid virtual gifts. Each gift makes the creator do one set action or say one set line, the same way each time.
The trend went viral in July 2023. NBC News reported on the creator Pinkydoll, who says "ice cream so good" when a viewer sends a virtual ice cream cone. NBC also named creators such as Natuecoco and Satoyu727 among the first to try the style.
How is AI changing NPCs?
AI NPCs are characters that use an AI model to choose what to say and do. They do not pick a line from a fixed list. You can type or say what you want, and they answer you. Some also keep a memory of what you did and said before.
This removes the thing that made NPCs a joke: the loop of set lines. An AI NPC can still make mistakes, or forget a detail. But it does not have to say the same words each time you talk to it.
Is there a game where every NPC is AI?
LifeSim, the game of this site, is one. It is a free life sim in your browser, set on a real map of Earth. Each person has a name, a job, a home, friends, and a daily routine. You talk to them in your own words, in person or by text, with no dialogue menus. They keep a journal of past events and use recent memories when they answer you. It is English only.
