What is a story game?
A story game is a game where the story is the main reason to play. You follow characters, make choices, and see what happens to them. Fights, puzzles, and scores come second, or not at all.
An interactive story game lets your choices change the story. A choice can change what a character says, who lives, or how the story ends. Writers plan each branch before the game ships.
This post names well known story games and says what each one does best. Then it shows a different kind: a story that an AI writes from your own words. You read this on the LifeSim blog, so LifeSim is that example. We say where it does not fit.
What are the best known story games?
Life is Strange: a choice you can take back
Life is Strange is an episodic story game from Dontnod. You play Max, a photography student who finds that she can rewind time. You can undo a choice and try another one. The story still asks you to live with the results.
Detroit: Become Human: three stories that cross
Detroit: Become Human is from Quantic Dream. You play three androids: Kara, Connor, and Markus. After each chapter, a chart shows the paths you took and the paths you missed. A main character can die, and the story goes on without them.
The Walking Dead: choices on a timer
The Walking Dead from Telltale follows Lee and a young girl, Clementine. Many dialogue choices have a timer, so you must answer fast. The game tells you when a character will remember what you said. The Telltale Definitive Series on Steam collects the series.
Disco Elysium: a story told by your own mind
Disco Elysium is a role-playing game from ZA/UM. You play a detective who cannot remember who he is. Your skills speak to you as voices in your head. You solve most problems with talk and dice rolls, not with fights. The Final Cut adds full voice acting.
Choices: Stories You Play: many stories on your phone
Choices is a mobile app from Pixelberry Studios. You read stories chapter by chapter and make decisions on the way. The app is free. Its App Store page says that some choices and outfits need Diamonds, and that Keys unlock chapters. You can earn or buy both.
How do choices work in interactive story games?
Writers make a tree of branches. Each choice moves you to a branch. Some branches join again later, so the writers do not need to write a whole new game for each path.
That is why the best story games feel so good. Every line has a writer behind it. The scenes are planned, voiced, and timed.
It is also the limit. You can only pick from the options on the screen. If you want to say something that the writers did not plan, the game cannot hear it.
Is there a story game with no script?
Yes. In an AI story game, an AI model writes the story while you play. You type what you want to do or say. The model writes what happens next.
AI Dungeon is a well known example. Its site calls it a free AI text adventure game. The story lives in the text, and there is no map. Read LifeSim vs AI Dungeon for the details.
An AI story has a different weak point. No writer checks each scene, so the pacing is less sure. You get freedom in exchange for a planned ending. For a broader list, read AI life simulator games.
How does LifeSim make a story from your own words?
LifeSim starts with one text box. You describe your character, for example “Maya Chen, 28, a kind florist in Paris.” The game reads the name, age, look, job, and city. Then it puts you in that city on a real 3D map of Earth.
The people around you have a job, a home, friends, and a daily routine. You talk to them in your own words, in person or by text message. There are no dialogue menus and no dialogue trees. Read open text chat for how that works.
People remember you. They keep a journal of past events and use it when they answer. They also text you on their own. Read NPC memory and AI NPCs for more.
Events appear on the map too: a house party, a karaoke night, a public breakup. You can go to them. Each day ends with a recap of its moments, so you can read back the story you made.
Which story game should you play?
| Game | Who writes the story | How you choose | Runs on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life is Strange | Writers | Options, with a rewind | PC and consoles |
| Detroit: Become Human | Writers | Options and actions | PC and PlayStation |
| The Walking Dead | Writers | Options, often on a timer | PC and consoles |
| Disco Elysium | Writers | Options and skill checks | PC and consoles |
| Choices: Stories You Play | Writers | Options, some paid | Phone |
| AI Dungeon | An AI model | You type | Browser and app |
| LifeSim | You, and the people who answer | You type | Browser |
Pick a written game if you want a planned plot and a strong ending. Pick LifeSim if you want a story that nobody planned. LifeSim has no set plot and no ending to reach, so it does not fit a player who wants one. It is in English only.
