What is an AI character generator?
An AI character generator is a tool that makes a character from a short text that you write. You say who the person is, and an AI model fills in the rest. The result can be a picture, a written backstory, a chat partner, or a person in a game.
So people mean different things when they search for one. This post sorts the tools into four kinds and names well known examples of each. Then it shows where LifeSim fits. You read this on the LifeSim blog, so we also say what LifeSim does not do.
What kinds of AI character generators are there?
Image generators: a picture of your character
You describe a character, and the tool draws them. This is good for art, a book cover, or a profile picture. The character is only a picture. You cannot talk to it.
Text generators: a backstory or a character sheet
You ask a chatbot to write a character for you. It gives you a name, a past, a personality, and goals. Writers and tabletop players use this to start a story or a campaign. The character lives only on the page.
Chat character makers: a persona you talk to
You write a persona, and an AI plays that persona in a chat. You can then talk to it as long as you like. The character has a voice, but no body and no world around it.
Game character creators: a person you play
A game gives you tools to build the person you will play. Most games use sliders and menus. A few now let you type, and an AI does part of the work.
What are the best known AI character generators?
Bing Image Creator: free pictures from Microsoft
Bing Image Creator is the free image generator from Microsoft. You type a description and get a picture. Its page says that guests can make images with a daily limit, and that you sign in to Bing for more options.
ChatGPT: a backstory, a sheet, or a picture
ChatGPT is a chatbot from OpenAI. Ask it for a character, and it writes a backstory or a full character sheet. It can also draw a picture of the character. OpenAI runs it on a freemium model: there is a free version and paid plans.
Character.AI: make a persona and chat with it
Character.AI lets you create a chatbot with its own personality, then talk to it. You can also chat with characters that other people made. The app is free, with paid plans such as Character.AI+. Its App Store page rates it 18+.
The Sims 4: Create a Sim, by hand
The Sims 4 has a detailed creator for the look, the personality, and the clothes of each Sim. You shape it all by hand, with no AI text box. The base game is free to download on Steam. Packs cost extra.
inZOI: AI tools inside a game creator
inZOI is a life sim on PC from Krafton, in Early Access. Its creator has many sliders and realistic faces. Its Steam page says you can make textures for outfits from text. The game is paid.
Is there an AI character generator where you live as the character?
Yes. That is what LifeSim does. Most tools stop when the character is made. In LifeSim, making the character is the first step of a life.
You start with one text box. You describe your character, for example “Maya Chen, 28, a kind florist in Paris. Curly brown hair, green eyes.” The game reads the name, age, look, job, and city. Then it draws a portrait and makes the character. Read AI character creator for the full steps.
Next, the game puts you in that city on a real 3D map of Earth. The people around you are AI people. Each one has a job, a home, friends, and a daily routine. You talk to them in your own words, in person or by text message. Read open text chat for how that works.
They remember you. They keep a journal of past events and use it when they answer. They also text you on their own. Read NPC memory for more. So your character is not just a picture or a sheet. It is a person you live as, in a world that keeps going.
What if you have no idea for a character?
Start from a random one. The random life generator gives you a character idea that you can use as it is or change. In the game, a Shuffle button makes a random life too.
You can also start from a featured life, or from lives that other players made. Browse lives you can play for ideas, from a nurse or a chef to a pop star or a wizard.
Good descriptions are short and clear. Write a name, an age, a look, a job, and a city. For example: “A 27-year-old nurse who works night shifts in Chicago, USA.”
