Thanatology skill

Thanatology has 5 levels, and each new level asks for more skill points than the one before. You only need 100 points to reach level 1. The first big jump happens right after that, because going from level 1 to level 2 takes 1,440 points, bringing your total to 1,540.

The point requirement continues to climb as you go higher. Reaching level 3 takes another 2,160 points, for 3,700 total points. Going from level 3 to level 4 asks for 3,600 points, which brings your running total to 7,300.

The largest jump is at the very end. You need 5,280 points to go from level 4 to level 5. When you finish level 5, your Sim has earned 12,580 total points.

Your Sim levels up fastest while Focused or Very Focused. Being Focused multiplies your skill gain by 1.4, and being Very Focused multiplies it by 1.6. Avoid studying while Angry or Sad, which drop your multiplier to 0.8. Very Angry and Very Sad drop it to 0.6, and Enraged drops it to 0.4.

Traits and moodlets stack by multiplying together with your emotion boost. The Macabre trait gives a 1.25 multiplier, Moderate Mental Affinity gives 1.3, and Strong Mental Affinity gives 1.4. Useful moodlets include Mental Brilliance at 1.3, Dedication at 1.5, and Omega Brain Boost at 2.

General skill boosts also work on Thanatology. The Snaggle Flustered boost multiplies your skill gain by 4. Parental Guidance and Skilling on Up both multiply your gain by 3.

Two careers ask for Thanatology before you can get promoted. In the Reaper career, you need level 2 for promotion from career level 2, and level 3 from career level 3. Later, you need skill level 4 to leave career level 5, and the maximum skill level of 5 to leave career level 7.

Both branches of the Undertaker career, Funeral Director and Mortician, also use this skill. In either branch, promotion from career level 6 requires Thanatology level 2, and promotion from career level 9 requires level 4. The game files do not list any recipes or gated interactions for this skill.

To skip the grind in Live mode, open the cheat console with Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac. Type testingcheats true first, then enter stats.set_skill_level statistic_Skill_AdultMinor_Thanatology 5 to max the skill. You can replace the 5 at the end with any number from 1 to 5.
