The Sims 4 traits

The Sims 4 traits: how many slots, 35 base game traits, conflicts, reward traits and their prices, and cheats to add or remove one.

A teen has 2 traits. A young adult, adult, or elder has 3. GamePressure gives these numbers for the base game. An adult also gets one bonus trait from the aspiration, for a total of 4.

A child picks from a smaller pool of traits. The GamePressure page does not state how many. Toddlers and infants have quirks, which the Sims Community guide lists on their own.

The GamePressure page says that traits cannot change during the life of a Sim. That is not the full answer. The Re-Traiting Potion in the Rewards Store lets a Sim pick new traits. A cheat can also change traits. The steps are below.

This post lists the base game traits, the conflicts, and the reward traits. The base game list comes from GamePressure, which does not show a date. Newer packs add traits that are not on it. Check each trait in your own game.

GamePressure sorts 35 traits into four groups. The group names are emotional, hobby, lifestyle, and social. The tables give a short note on each.

A Sim cannot hold two traits that conflict. GamePressure lists these pairs and groups:

  • Active and Lazy.
  • Hot-Headed, Gloomy, and Cheerful.
  • Goofball and Snob.
  • Foodie and Glutton.
  • Ambitious and Lazy.
  • Childish with Snob, Hates Children, or Evil.
  • Neat with Lazy or Slob.
  • Good, Bad, and Mean.
  • Hates Children with Family-Oriented.
  • Noncommittal and Family-Oriented.
  • Outgoing and Loner.

The GamePressure page names a trait called Bad in this list, but the trait tables do not show it. We cannot say what it is. Check each pair in your own game.

The Sims Community guide says that reward traits are “additional traits Sims can earn through gameplay”. They often come with a benefit or a cost. The guide sorts them by where they come from.

  • Aspiration bonus traits come with an aspiration. Examples: High Metabolism and Dastardly.
  • Aspiration reward traits come from the end of an aspiration. Long Lived extends elderhood.
  • Reward Store traits cost Satisfaction Points.
  • Career reward traits come at set career levels.
  • High school traits show how school ended, such as Valedictorian or Expelled from High School.
  • University degree traits give a head start in a career.
  • Skill reward traits come from a high skill level or a hidden skill.
  • Growing up traits come from childhood and teen life.

The prices run from 500 to 10,000 Satisfaction Points. The guide gives three examples. Frugal costs 2,000 and cuts household bills by 25%. Savant costs 4,000 and speeds all skill gain by 25%. Forever Full costs 10,000 and removes the need to eat.

The guide also lists Formative Moments. A Sim earns one by finishing a childhood challenge. A Sim can also buy one for 100 Satisfaction Points. Prices may differ in your version, so check the store.

Read the satisfaction points cheat if you want points fast. Read the aspiration cheat to finish aspirations faster.

Use these cheats. The Sims Community guide lists them. Turn on cheats first, as our cheats guide explains.

  • Type traits.equip_trait followed by the trait code name to add a trait.
  • Type traits.remove_trait followed by the trait code name to remove a trait.

There is one exception. Indicator traits have no effect when you equip them. Change the linked stat instead, with stats.set_stat. The guide also says that you can give Eco Master, Entrepreneur, and Master Crafter with TestingCheats by Shift-clicking your Sim.

To edit the traits of an existing Sim in Create a Sim, read the CAS cheat guide. It covers cas.fulleditmode.

Yes, with a mod. Snooty Sims describes the More Traits in CAS mod by thepancake1 and MizoreYukii. The mod gives 2 slots to toddlers and 3 to children. It gives 4 to teens and 5 to young adults, adults, and elders.

The mod needs no pack. You do not have to fill every slot, and the game adds no random trait. The Snooty Sims article is from November 2023, and the linked file is from 2021. Back up your saves before you add a mod. Read our mods guide for the safe steps.

Use this rule. Pick traits that match the story you want, then check the conflicts. A Neat Sim in a messy house gets tense. A Noncommittal Sim in a long marriage gets tense.

For a long family story, read the Legacy Challenge rules. For other play styles, read Sims 4 challenges.

It does not fit here. This post covers one menu in The Sims 4. LifeSim is a different kind of game. It is free, it runs in a browser, and you live one life in a real city.

Try it if you like the people side of the Sims. Read games like The Sims for more choices.

Can you change a Sim’s traits?

Yes. Buy the Re-Traiting Potion in the Rewards Store for 5,000 Satisfaction Points, as our CAS cheat guide explains. The potion works only for the Sim who bought it. The cheat cas.fulleditmode and the trait cheats above also work. GamePressure says that traits cannot change, but it does not mention the potion.

Which Sims 4 traits give a bonus in a career?

GamePressure says Ambitious gives strong good moods from career success. Our sources do not list other career bonuses. Check our career cheats guide.

How many traits does a child have?

GamePressure says a child picks from a smaller pool. It does not give a number.

Do traits need an expansion pack?

The 35 traits above come from the base game list. Packs add more traits. Read the expansion pack list for the packs.

What is the best trait?

No source ranks traits in a way we trust. Pick the trait that fits your story.
