What is The Sims Project Rene?
Project Rene is a game from the team behind The Sims. EA and Maxis have not given it a final name. “Project Rene” is a code name.
The idea changed over time. In 2023, 80.lv called it essentially The Sims 5. In January 2026, EA said that Project Rene is not the successor to The Sims 4.
Today EA describes Project Rene as a social game. EA says it “has evolved to focus on social multiplayer play”. The goal is “a more direct way for friends to share creativity together”.
This post lists what the sources say, and where the sources disagree. We found no release date, no price, and no store page.
Is Project Rene The Sims 5?
No. EA says Project Rene “is not the successor to The Sims 4”. EA also says that it is separate from any future deep, single-player life simulation.
That is a change. Early reports from 2023 said that Project Rene was essentially The Sims 5. Insider Gaming says that EA linked the change to player feedback.
EA also says that single-player PC and console games stay part of its future. Insider Gaming reports this line from EA: “At its core, The Sims was built on a deep, single-player life simulation.”
Read our Sims 5 release date post for the state of the next numbered game. Insider Gaming says that EA gave no timing for it.
What did the 2023 reveal show?
The 2023 reveal came from the Behind The Sims video series. Rodiek spoke about the game in it. 80.lv wrote the news on February 2, 2023.
He showed a tool that he called Apartment Customization. A player can change the colors, patterns, materials, and sizes of furniture. 80.lv says that the game was early in development and years from release.
That reveal is now three years old. Treat it as history. The 2026 plan from EA replaces it.
Is Project Rene an MMO?
No. The game director, Grant Rodiek, said in 2023 that Project Rene is not an MMO. 80.lv reports that it is not a shared public world. The game keeps a single-player base with more online options.
In 2023, the plan had two multiplayer parts. A player could build and decorate a house with a friend. A player could also continue a game on PC or on mobile, because the game was cross-platform.
The 2026 plan is different. EA now puts social multiplayer at the center. The sources do not say how many players can join one session. We do not know if the game keeps the 2023 plan for a solo mode.
Which platforms does Project Rene use?
The sources disagree. Pocket Tactics says that Project Rene is a mobile-first life sim. It says the game skips Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S “at least for now”. The same article says that it is for iOS and Android only.
Insider Gaming also uses “mobile-first” in its title. Its article names no platform. ScreenHub names none either. In fact, the ScreenHub text never uses the word “mobile-first”. Only its title does.
ScreenHub adds that EA and Maxis are working on new Sims experiences for PC, console, and mobile. It is not clear if Project Rene is one of them.
| Question | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Mobile-first? | Pocket Tactics and the Insider Gaming title say yes |
| iOS and Android only? | Pocket Tactics says yes. The other two sources do not say |
| Switch 2, PS5, Xbox? | Pocket Tactics says no, at least for now |
| PC? | No source says. No source rules it out |
When is the Project Rene release date?
There is no release date. Pocket Tactics says that no date exists. It reports a post on X that says playtests will happen during the year. Insider Gaming and ScreenHub give no detail on playtests.
We also found no price, no list of features, and no store page. Do not trust a site that shows a release date or a price for Project Rene today.
Pocket Tactics adds context. The Sims Mobile shut down about two months before the article, which is dated January 12, 2026. Read Is The Sims Mobile still playable? for that story.
What does Project Rene mean for The Sims 4?
EA says it will keep adding content and updates to The Sims 4. Pocket Tactics reports that over half of the EA development team works on The Sims 4 and its next step.
Insider Gaming notes one surprise. Royalty & Legacy was expected to be the last Sims 4 expansion. The new EA post suggests that this may not be true. Read our Royalty & Legacy post for the pack.
If you play The Sims 4 now, nothing changes. Project Rene does not replace your game. Read the Sims 4 expansion list to see what you can buy today.
Which games are like Project Rene?
Pocket Tactics names two rivals: inZOI and Heartopia. inZOI is a detailed life sim for PC and Mac. Heartopia is a free cozy life sim with multiplayer. Read our Heartopia guide and games like inZOI.
Paralives is another option for players who want a house builder. It is in early access on Steam. Read Paralives vs The Sims 4 for the comparison.

What do we still not know about Project Rene?
A lot. The sources leave these questions open:
- The price, and the way the game earns money.
- The release date, and the dates of the playtests.
- Whether the game runs on PC.
- How many players can join one session.
- Whether a solo mode exists.
- Whether the game has mods.
- The final name of the game.
An unannounced game can change. The plan moved from a Sims 5 idea to a social mobile idea in about three years. It can move again.
Where does LifeSim fit?
LifeSim is not a Sims game, and it is not a rival to a mobile social game from EA. It is a free life sim in a browser. You live one life in one city on a real map of Earth.
The people in LifeSim answer in their own words. They remember what you said when you meet again. Choose LifeSim if you want a slow, single life and no download.
Choose Project Rene, when it comes, if you want to build with friends. We have not played it. Nobody outside EA has played it in public.
