What does the Gloomy trait do in The Sims 4?

Gloomy trait

Gloomy is a personality trait from the base game, for Child to Elder Sims. It changes 2 standard moodlets: Heartbroken by Betrayal becomes Heartbroken by Betrayal (Sad +3). Its strongest own moodlet is Spectral Influence (Inspired +1). Skill gain for mental skills ×0.6. Cheat: traits.equip_trait trait_Gloomy.

Gloomy is a base game personality trait in The Sims 4. You can give it to human Sims from the Child age through Elder. It conflicts with the Cheerful and Hot-Headed traits.

This trait shifts how your Sim reacts to relationship losses and changes how fast they learn skills. It boosts creative skill gain while slowing down mental, physical, and social skill gain.

What the Gloomy trait changes in play

Gloomy Sims learn creative skills faster, with multipliers of ×1.2 and ×1.4. At the same time, they learn mental, physical, and social skills slower, with multipliers of ×0.8 and ×0.6. These hidden multipliers combine with other active effects in the game.

This trait also replaces certain relationship moodlets with stronger Sad ones. Heartbroken by Betrayal changes from an Angry moodlet with weight 2 to a Sad moodlet with weight 3 for 1 day. Break Up Blues becomes Devastating Breakup, raising the Sad weight from 2 to 3 for 10 hours.

Your Sim can also get the Spectral Influence moodlet, which gives +1 Inspired with no timer while its cause lasts. Five interactions check for the Gloomy trait, including Share Melancholy Thoughts, Sigh..., and Argue about Outlook on Life.

Who Gloomy suits and how to get it

Gloomy suits Sims who focus on creative skills rather than physical, mental, or social ones. Because it conflicts with Cheerful and Hot-Headed, you cannot pick those traits on the same Sim. It works on human Sims from Child to Elder.

You can pick the Gloomy trait in Create a Sim. You can also add or remove it in Live mode using the cheat console. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac, then enter traits.equip_trait trait_Gloomy or traits.remove_trait trait_Gloomy.
