How to become a pilot in BitLife

How to become a pilot in BitLife: flight school, the pilot license test answers, the airline career ladder, private planes, and pilot challenges.

Finish university. At 18 or older, take 40 hours of flight school, then pass the pilot’s license test. Then apply for the Pilot Trainee job in the airline jobs. Work hard every year to get promotions.

You do not need a Job Pack. The wiki lists the airline jobs with the normal full-time jobs, not with the paid special careers.

We checked these steps on the BitLife wiki and in two game guides, in October 2026. The guides are from 2024. Candywriter can change prices, menus, and job names in an update, so your game can look a little different.

RequirementWhat you need
Age18 or older for the pilot’s license test.
EducationA university degree. The wiki lists no required major. Destructoid suggests Mathematics or Engineering.
Flight school40 hours of lessons, bought 1 hour or 10 hours at a time.
LicenseA pass on the pilot’s license test.
MoneyEnough for 40 hours of lessons and the test. Destructoid says to save at least $6,000.
KarmaGood karma. You can die in a crash during flight school.

The Career Collections list on the wiki gives the short version: University, plus a Pilot License. Nothing else is listed.

Open Activities, then Licenses, then Pilot License. Flight school and the test are both there. BitLife added them in the Luxury Update, version 1.32, on March 8, 2020.

Step 1: Take 40 hours of flight school

You must finish 40 hours of lessons before the game lets you take the test. You can buy 1 hour or 10 hours each time. Four blocks of 10 hours is the fast way.

Flight school has no minigame. The wiki says you get one line on your timeline, such as “I took 10 hours of flying lessons.”

Step 2: Pay for it

The game shows the price for one hour on the screen. The price changes with your country. Destructoid says each hour costs $145. The wiki says the hourly price is often close to the price of a boating test in your country.

The test itself costs more. The wiki says it is usually upwards of $1,000, and the price also changes with your country. Each new try costs money again.

Step 3: Stay alive

Flight school can kill you. The wiki says that a crash can happen even with full health. It also says that low karma makes a death more likely. Do good things in the years before you start, and play it on a life you do not mind losing.

Step 4: Pass the test

When you have 40 hours, take the test from the same Pilot License menu. The answers are in the next section.

BitLife has the same kind of quiz for cars. If you still need that one, read the BitLife driving test answers.

Destructoid says the test has four parts. Each part shows you one question or one picture, and you must pick the right answer. The parts are written theory, landing markers, marshaller signals, and instruments. Gfinity lists the same four topics.

Written questions

QuestionAnswer
The flap on the horizontal stabilizerElevator
The flap on the vertical stabilizerRudder
The force that opposes thrustDrag
The force that opposes dragThrust
The nickname for the six basic instrumentsThe Six Pack
The area of the plane where the pilot sitsCockpit
Left and right movement of the noseYaw
Up and down movement of the nosePitch

Destructoid lists a ninth question, with the answer Roll. Its wording did not match the real meaning of roll, so we left it out.

Pictures

  • Landing markers. The game shows one of three ground signs: Land Cautiously, Emergency Landing Only, or Landing Forbidden.
  • Marshaller signals. A person on the ground signals one of three moves: Move Forward, Stop, or Turn Left.
  • Instruments. You name one of four dials: Altimeter, Heading Indicator, Lean Indicator, or Vertical Speed Indicator.

The picture questions need you to read the image, so a list of names helps only a little. Look closely at the arms of the marshaller and at the label on each dial.

With the license and a degree, look in the full-time jobs for Pilot Trainee. The wiki lists it in the airline jobs.

The airline career ladder

JobWhat you needPromotes to
Pilot TraineeUniversity and a pilot’s licenseCo Pilot
Co PilotUniversity and time as a Pilot TraineePilot
PilotUniversity and time as a Co PilotChief Pilot
Chief PilotUniversity and time as a PilotThe top of the ladder

The job list does not use the real names “first officer” and “captain.” Co Pilot is the first officer step. Chief Pilot is the top job, and the achievement for it has the name Airline Captain. The wiki also lists salaries, but the numbers do not go up in order. We left them out.

How to get promoted

Open your job each year and choose to work harder. The wiki’s note for the Airline Captain achievement says the same thing: keep working hard until you reach the top. Most BitLife jobs give raises based on performance, and sometimes on smarts and looks.

Keep your stress in check. The wiki says that too much stress can cause high blood pressure, and a heart attack can kill you.

A side door from flight attendant

The wiki’s table shows one more way in. Senior Flight Attendant promotes to Pilot Trainee. Flight Attendant needs only high school. We did not test this path, and the trainee job still lists a degree and a license. Treat it as a maybe.

Stay for 20 years

Hold a job for 20 years in a row and you collect it in your Career Collection. Pilot and Flight Attendant are both on the list.

We found no proof of a military pilot job. The wiki says the military has five branches, and the Air Force is one of them. You can enlist at 18, or join as an officer if you finished university.

But the wiki does not describe a fighter pilot or a military flying job. A few web pages say that the Air Force is a shortcut to an airline job. Those pages looked like copies of each other, with no real source, so we left their claims out.

Join the Air Force if you want the uniform. Get your license through flight school if you want to fly.

Yes. The Luxury Update in March 2020 added aircraft that you can own, such as planes and helicopters. The update notes also name blimps and hot air balloons.

You must have a pilot’s license to buy or own an aircraft. You do not need the airline job. Go to Activities, then Shopping, and look under Specialty Vehicle Dealers. The wiki says the plane dealer is one of the first two options there. Its name changes from game to game.

What you can do with your plane

  • Go for a ride in it.
  • Sell it, gift it, or scrap it for a little money.
  • Fly it on vacation. The God Mode Update, version 1.33, added this.

Keep your plane in good condition. The wiki says that a plane in poor condition can crash. You can survive the crash or die. Sometimes the crash turns out to be a bad dream, and you earn the Nightmare achievement.

The license also matters outside the airline. The Astronaut Job Pack needs a pilot’s license to enter the Space Academy. That pack is a paid purchase. See what BitLife costs before you buy it.

Ribbons

We found no pilot ribbon on the wiki’s ribbon list. Our full list of BitLife ribbons explains how to get each one.

Achievements

  • Airline Captain. Become an airline captain. The wiki rates it Moderate. It needs no purchase, and it gives no ribbon.
  • Nightmare. Wake up from a crash that was only a dream. The wiki rates it Very Hard and says it depends on chance.

Past challenges with planes

ChallengeDatesPilot tasks
Land, Sea & AirJune 5–9, 2021Own aircraft worth $1M or more. Survive a bad event in your boat or plane.
SchwarzeneggerMarch 26–30, 2022Own 5 or more aircraft.
Altruistic AviatorMay 20–24, 2023Become a pilot. Then gift a jet to your supervisor, a hot-air balloon to a coworker, and a blimp to your best friend.
Master of the ElementsApril 20–24, 2024Buy and ride any aircraft.
Defying GravityMarch 8–12, 2025Study physics at university. Work as a pilot. Fly a plane that you own.

All five challenges are over. Each one also had tasks that do not involve planes, which we did not list. The wiki says that Candywriter moved unfinished challenges into a paid challenge vault in October 2022. For the rest, see our guide to BitLife challenges.

  • No degree. The license alone does not get you the trainee job. Finish university first.
  • Too little money. Save for all 40 hours and the test before you start. A part-time job in university helps.
  • Low karma. Flight school can kill you. Low karma makes it more likely.
  • An old plane. A plane in poor condition can crash. Keep it in good condition, or sell it.
  • Lazy years. Promotions come from hard work. Choose to work harder each year.

Want a different career? The steps to become an actor in BitLife need lessons from childhood, and the Actor career is a paid pack.

Yes, but it is not like BitLife. In LifeSim, you live one slow life on a real map of Earth. You move by legs between real places. The people you meet talk back in their own words, and they remember you.

LifeSim has no career ladder like the one above. There is no flight school, no pilot test, and no promotion from Co Pilot to Chief Pilot. If you want to climb a job ladder in ten minutes, stay with BitLife.

Is being a pilot in BitLife free?

Yes, in real money. The airline jobs are normal jobs, not a Job Pack. You pay only in-game money for flight school and the test.

What age can you become a pilot in BitLife?

The license test opens at 18. You also need a degree, so most characters start the trainee job after university.

What degree do you need to be a pilot in BitLife?

The wiki lists only “University.” Destructoid suggests Mathematics or Engineering. The Defying Gravity challenge used Physics.

How many hours of flight school do you need?

40 hours. Buy them in blocks of 10 to save time.

Can you die in flight school?

Yes. The wiki says a crash can kill you even with full health. Good karma lowers the chance.

Do you need a license to buy a plane?

Yes. The game needs a pilot’s license before you can buy or own any aircraft.

Is there a shortcut?

We found no tested shortcut. See BitLife hacks that work for tricks that help with money and stats.
