First, open the cheat console while you play in Live mode. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC, or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac. On PlayStation and Xbox, hold down all four shoulder buttons at once. Type testingcheats true into the box and press Enter.

Next, give your active Sim a job or change their rank with the internal career name. Type careers.add_career career_Adult_Astronaut to start at the first level, or careers.promote career_Adult_Astronaut to go up one rank. You can type careers.demote career_Adult_Astronaut to drop a rank, or careers.remove_career career_Adult_Astronaut to quit the job. To end a career with a pension instead of a salary, enter careers.retire career_Adult_Astronaut, or use careers.lay_off career_Adult_Astronaut if you own Growing Together.

You can also adjust the work meter directly with three different commands. Type careers.add_performance 0 50 career_Adult_Astronaut to add 50 points for the active Sim, whom the 0 represents. Type careers.set_performance career_Adult_Astronaut 100 to set the exact points to 100. You can also type careers.set_performance_percentage career_Adult_Astronaut 1 to fill the bar, where 0 is empty and 0.5 is half.

A common mistake is typing the regular English job title instead of the internal career name. Each command needs the internal code, such as career_Adult_Astronaut. If you do not know the internal code, type careers.add_career with no career name after it. This action shows you the full list of internal career names.

Watch the exact order of words and numbers when you change work performance. The command careers.add_performance puts the Sim number 0 first, the point amount second, and the career name last. However, careers.set_performance and careers.set_performance_percentage put the career name before the number.

Each cheat also has strict limits on what it can do at one time. The command careers.promote only raises your Sim by one level, so you must enter it again for another promotion. Finally, the command careers.lay_off fails unless you have Growing Together and turn on the career lay-off game option.
