In The Sims 4, Death by Beetles comes with the Eco Lifestyle expansion pack. Your Sim does not die in the normal way from this cause. Instead, your Sim turns into a ghost after drinking three Beetle Juices in a row.

You must have your Sim finish each drink before the effect of the previous drink wears off. The second drink gives your Sim a warning moodlet called Feeling Strange and Unusual. Drinking a third glass while that moodlet is active turns your Sim into a ghost.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Beetles. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_Beetle. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How the three Beetle Juices work

The process starts when your Sim drinks one Beetle Juice. This first glass applies an invisible effect that lasts for 133 minutes in the game. You do not see a warning on the screen yet, so you must watch the clock.

Have your Sim drink a second Beetle Juice before those 133 minutes run out. This second drink replaces the hidden timer with a visible moodlet called Feeling Strange and Unusual. This visible warning also lasts for 133 minutes.

If your Sim drinks a third Beetle Juice during that 133 minute window, the outcome is certain. There are no random odds to roll. The third drink directly adds the ghost trait to your Sim.

Staying safe and why cheats fail

The game files list no special traits, moods, or objects that make a Sim immune to this outcome. No special conditions change the odds, because the third drink always works. To keep your Sim alive, wait for the Feeling Strange and Unusual moodlet to expire before drinking more.

Many players use the death.toggle false cheat to protect their Sims. That cheat stops every death that runs through a standard death interaction. However, it does not stop a Sim from turning into a ghost by other means.

Because the third Beetle Juice adds the ghost trait directly, the death toggle cheat cannot block it. You must manage what your Sim drinks to avoid this transformation.

The Beetle ghost and bringing Sims back

A Sim who drinks the third juice receives the Death by Beetles ghost trait. The internal name for this trait is trait_Ghost_Beetle. Your Sim becomes a playable ghost right away.

You can reverse this change with a cheat in Live mode. Open the cheat console by pressing Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac.

Next, select the ghost Sim in your household. Type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_Beetle into the console and press Enter. Removing the ghost trait brings your Sim back to life immediately.
