Death by Being Swarmed by Flies

A Sim who swats at flies on a trash pile and then tries to bond with them can be swarmed to death. The chance is 2.44% per bonding. Safe: Servo, pregnant Sims.

Death by Being Swarmed by Flies comes with the Eco Lifestyle expansion pack in The Sims 4. To trigger it, tell your Sim to swat at flies on a trash can or dumpster. This action gives your Sim the Swatted moodlet, which acts as a warning.

Next, tell your Sim to choose Bond with Flies while they still have the Swatted moodlet. Each bonding attempt has a 2.44 base chance to kill a Sim who swatted first. Without the Swatted moodlet, the weight of the lethal outcome drops to 0.

How to make it happen

  1. Swat at the flies on a trash can or dumpster (Eco Lifestyle) to get the Swatted moodlet.
  2. Then choose Bond with Flies.

How to avoid it

  1. Use Try to Clear Flies instead.
  2. Don't bond with flies while Swatted.
  3. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, pregnant Sims.

These moodlets stop it before the end: Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, Grimbucha'd.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Being Swarmed by Flies. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_Flies. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How fly swarming kills a Sim

Wait for flies to appear on an overflowing trash pile, trash can, or dumpster. Direct your Sim to swat at the flies first. Once your Sim receives the Swatted moodlet, select the Bond with Flies interaction.

The game picks from four weighted outcomes each time your Sim tries to bond with the flies. Three outcomes let your Sim survive with base weights of 1, 4, and 1. The fourth outcome causes Death by Being Swarmed by Flies and has a base weight of 0.15.

This 0.15 weight gives a 2.44 base chance of death per bonding attempt. Because the base chance is low, you usually need to repeat the interaction several times. If the Swatted moodlet expires, your Sim must swat at the flies again to keep the lethal outcome active.

What changes the fly death odds

A Sim who has not swatted the flies has a 0 multiplier on the death outcome. A ghost who already died of flies also gets a 0 multiplier on the death outcome and two safe outcomes. Several conditions also save a Sim from dying, including Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, and Grimbucha'd.

Being dirty or sloppy actually makes the Bond with Flies interaction safer for your Sim. One safe outcome gets a 1.5 multiplier when your Sim's Hygiene is low, at or below -30. That same safe outcome also gets a 1.2 multiplier when your Sim has the Slob trait.

Because those multipliers raise the weight of a non-lethal outcome, they make the lethal outcome less likely to happen. To avoid this death entirely during normal play, choose the Try to Clear Flies interaction instead. You can also wait for the Swatted moodlet to end before your Sim bonds with flies.

The fly ghost and resurrection cheats

When the flies kill your Sim, the Sim receives the trait_Ghost_Flies trait. You can prevent this death before it happens by opening the cheat console in Live mode. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC, Cmd + Shift + C on Mac, or all four shoulder buttons on console.

Type testingcheats true, and then enter death.toggle false to stop every death that runs through a death interaction. If your Sim is already a ghost in your household, you can bring them back to life with a cheat. Enter traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_Flies into the cheat console to remove the ghost trait and restore the Sim.
