Death by Emotional Starvation in The Sims 4 kills fairies from the Enchanted by Nature expansion pack. Your fairy dies when their Emotional Appetite motive runs out and hits 0.

You cause this death by stopping your fairy from feeding. A full Emotional Appetite takes 1,088 minutes to empty on its own. Using fairy abilities drains the motive faster and speeds up the death.

How to make it happen

  1. Let a fairy's (Enchanted by Nature) Emotional Appetite run down.
  2. Fairy abilities use it up faster.

How to avoid it

  1. Refill it: bottled emotions from the apothecary add to it.
  2. Watch for Emotionally Starving.
  3. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, pregnant Sims.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Emotional Starvation. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

Every ghost type and its powers are on the ghosts page.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_EmotionalStarvation. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How the Emotional Appetite timer kills a fairy

Fairies have a special need called Emotional Appetite that starts at 300. This motive drops by 0.27585 every Sim-minute when your Sim is not feeding. If you do nothing to refill it, a full bar reaches 0 in 1,088 minutes.

You do not have to wait for the natural decay timer to run out. Your Sim can use fairy abilities to spend the Emotional Appetite motive much faster. Have your fairy use their powers repeatedly to drain the bar.

The game gives you the Emotionally Starving warning moodlet. Once the Emotional Appetite value reaches 0, the timer fails. Your fairy then dies from Emotional Starvation.

How to prevent emotional starvation and stay safe

You can keep your fairy alive by watching for the Emotionally Starving moodlet. When you see this warning, refill the Emotional Appetite motive right away. Bottled emotions from the apothecary add to the motive and keep the bar from hitting 0.

Certain conditions also save your Sim from dying when the motive fails. A fairy survives if they have the Death-Proof or Total Immortal states. The game also saves Sims with Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, or Grimbucha'd.

You can also turn off death with a cheat in Live mode. Open the cheat console and type death.toggle false to stop every death that runs through a death interaction. This cheat does not stop a Sim from turning into a ghost by other means.

The emotional starvation ghost and resurrection cheat

A fairy who dies this way gets the Death by Emotional Starvation ghost trait. The game files list this trait as trait_Ghost_EmotionalStarvation. You can bring the Sim back to life by removing this trait while the ghost is in your household.

Open the cheat console in Live mode by pressing Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac. Type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_EmotionalStarvation to restore your Sim to life.
