Death by Falling from Heights

A climber on a mountain route who keeps climbing while Battered and Bruised can fall to their death. The chance is 7.46% per climb. Safe: Servo, pregnant Sims.

To cause Death by Falling from Heights in The Sims 4, you need the Snowy Escape expansion pack. Send your Sim to climb a mountain route, get the Battered and Bruised moodlet, and keep climbing.

An uninjured Sim cannot fall to their death. Once your Sim has the Battered and Bruised moodlet, each normal climb has a 7.46% base chance of death.

The odds of death by falling from heights

Climbing a mountain route while already Battered and Bruised, per climb. The game draws one result at random, by weight; a condition multiplies the weight of every result it is tuned on. The base chance assumes the Sim has the Battered and Bruised moodlet; the Sim has a struggling climbing moodlet (Reaching Rock Bottom, Peak Failure, Summit or Plummet, Battered and Bruised, Fatigued, Excruciatingly Fatigued or Pulled Muscle); the Sim's Rock Climbing skill is level 0 to 3; the Sim's Fitness skill is level 0 to 5 (a Sim without a skill counts as level 0).

How to make it happen

  1. Climb a route (Snowy Escape) and get Battered and Bruised.
  2. Keep climbing: only a hurt climber can fall to their death.
  3. Fear of Death and rain or snow make a failed climb more likely.

How to avoid it

  1. Stop climbing while Battered and Bruised.
  2. Higher Rock Climbing and Fitness, climbing gear and the mountaineer traits make a good climb more likely.
  3. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, pregnant Sims.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Falling from Heights. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_ClimbingRoute. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How climbing a mountain route kills a Sim

Death by Falling from Heights is a chance death that happens on mountain routes. First, send your Sim to climb a route and get the Battered and Bruised warning moodlet. Once they have this injury moodlet, direct them to climb a mountain route again.

The game picks from weighted outcomes for each climb. The fatal outcome has a base weight of 14. If your Sim does not have the Battered and Bruised moodlet, the game multiplies the death weight by 0. Battered and Bruised also counts as a struggling climbing moodlet, which multiplies a failed climb's weight by 3, so a hurt Sim with no Rock Climbing or Fitness skill has a 7.46% chance per climb.

This 0 multiplier means a healthy climber never dies from falling. To keep your Sim alive, stop climbing as soon as the Battered and Bruised moodlet appears.

What changes your odds on the mountain

Several factors make a safe climb more likely and lower the relative chance of dying. Wearing climbing gear multiplies the weight of a successful climb by 2.5. Having the Middling, Capable, or Expert Mountaineer trait multiplies success weights by 1.2.

Higher skills also favor a safe climb. Rock Climbing skill levels 4 to 6 multiply success weights by 3, and levels 7 to 10 multiply them by 5. Fitness skill levels 6 to 10 multiply the weight of a successful climb by 2.

Other conditions make a non-lethal failed climb more likely. Rain, snow, or the Fear of Death trait multiply failure weights by 2, while thundersnow or icy ground multiply them by 3. A ghost can't fall to its death, and states like Death-Proof or Total Immortal save Sims.

The falling ghost and how to revive them

When a Sim dies on a climb, they become a ghost with the Death by Falling from Heights trait. If you want to prevent this and every other death interaction before it happens, use a cheat. Open the cheat console in Live mode and type death.toggle false.

You can also bring a dead climber in your household back to life. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac to open the console. Enter traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_ClimbingRoute to remove the ghost trait and revive your Sim.
