Death by Broken Heart

A Sim whose heart breaks again and again can die of a broken heart. Safe: Servo, Vampire, pregnant Sims.

To cause Death by Broken Heart in The Sims 4, you need the Lovestruck expansion pack. Your Sim must experience repeated romantic failures until a hidden heartbreak meter reaches 95. This causes the Total Despair moodlet and triggers the death.

You fill this meter through failed romantic socials, divorces, and eating alone while sad. Small events add 1.5 to the meter, medium events add 3, and large events add 7. The meter drains by 0.006 per minute, so you must act fast.

How to make it happen

  1. Have the Sim's romances fail over and over (Lovestruck): failed romantic socials, eating alone while sad, and a divorce all add heartbreak.
  2. Keep going until Total Despair appears.

How to avoid it

  1. Give the Sim time between heartbreaks: the meter slowly drains.
  2. Vampires can't die of a broken heart.
  3. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, Vampire, pregnant Sims.

These moodlets stop it before the end: Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, Grimbucha'd.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Broken Heart. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_BrokenHeart. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How the heartbreak meter kills a Sim

The game tracks heartbreak on a hidden meter. You increase this number when your Sim fails at romance. Eating alone while sad, failing at romantic socials, and going through a divorce all add points.

Each bad event gives a small, medium, or large hit to the meter. A small hit adds 1.5, a medium hit adds 3, and a large hit adds 7. You need to push the total score to 95.

The meter drains at a rate of 0.006 per minute. If you wait too long between sad events, your Sim recovers. When the meter hits 95, the Sim gets the Total Despair moodlet and dies.

Who is safe from a broken heart

Only Young Adult, Adult, and Elder Sims can die from a broken heart. Younger Sims are safe from this death. Vampires are also immune and cannot die this way.

Certain conditions protect your Sim from dying. These include Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, and Grimbucha'd. You can also space out romantic failures so the meter drains on its own.

If you want to stop death with a cheat, open the console in Live mode. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac. Type testingcheats true, then enter death.toggle false to stop every death that runs through a death interaction.

The broken heart ghost and resurrection

When a Sim dies this way, they become a ghost with the Death by Broken Heart trait. The game files list this as trait_Ghost_BrokenHeart. This trait defines their ghost type.

You can bring a ghost in your household back to life using the cheat console in Live mode. Open the console and type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_BrokenHeart. Removing this ghost trait restores the Sim to life.
