Death by Overheating

A Sim who stays in scorching weather too long overheats and dies. Overheating, from the first warning to death: 100 Sim minutes. Safe: Servo, pregnant Sims.

To cause Death by Overheating in The Sims 4, you need the Seasons expansion pack. Leave your Sim in hot weather until the Lethal Heat moodlet appears. Once that warning shows up, a hidden timer starts counting toward death.

You do not roll a random chance for this death. Instead, a hidden heat meter fills up from 0 to 100 while the moodlet stays active. Extreme heat fills this meter much faster than regular hot weather.

The warning moodlet is called Lethal Heat!.

How to make it happen

  1. Leave the Sim in the heat until the Lethal Heat! moodlet appears (Seasons).
  2. Extreme heat fills the heat meter much faster.

How to avoid it

  1. Get rid of the Lethal Heat! moodlet before the meter fills.
  2. A sleeping Sim doesn't overheat.
  3. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, pregnant Sims.

These moodlets stop it before the end: Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, Grimbucha'd.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Overheating. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Overheat. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How the overheating timer kills your Sim

When your Sim gets too hot, the game gives them the Lethal Heat moodlet. This warning starts a hidden burning meter at 0, and your Sim dies when it reaches 100. In standard hot weather, this meter increases by 1 point per Sim minute, which gives you 100 minutes.

Extreme weather makes the situation much more dangerous for your household. During extreme heat, the hidden meter goes up by 8 points per Sim minute. At that speed, your Sim has 12.5 Sim minutes from the first warning before they die.

Who is safe from overheating and how to survive

This death affects Child, Teen, Young Adult, Adult, and Elder Sims. Certain conditions save a Sim when the meter hits 100, including Death-Proof, Total Immortal, and Grimbucha'd. The states Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, and Grim Overload also protect your Sim from dying.

To keep a vulnerable Sim alive, you must remove the Lethal Heat moodlet before the meter reaches 100. Putting your Sim to sleep also stops them from overheating. If you want to disable death by cheat, open the console and enter death.toggle false in Live mode.

The overheating ghost and how to revive them

When the timer runs out, your Sim dies and gets the Death by Overheating ghost trait. The game files list this specific trait as trait_ghost_Overheat. Thetuning ID for this death type is 184951.

You can bring this ghost back to life using the cheat console in Live mode. and Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac. With the ghost in your household, type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Overheat to restore them.
