How do you die of spellcaster overload in The Sims 4?
Death by Spellcaster Overload
A spellcaster who reaches Magical Overload can be killed by the overload. The chance is 33.33% per overload. With every condition that raises it, it reaches 100%. Safe: Servo, pregnant Sims.
To cause Death by Spellcaster Overload in The Sims 4, let a spellcaster reach the Magical Overload moodlet. This death requires the Realm of Magic game pack. Each time a spellcaster's magic overloads, the Sim faces a chance of dying.
The base chance of death is 33.33 per overload. You can raise or lower this risk using specific perks, locations, and moodlets. If you want to prevent this death entirely, you can also use a cheat code.

How to make it happen
- Let a spellcaster (Realm of Magic) build up to the Magical Overload moodlet.
- Each overload can be fatal.
How to avoid it
- A spellcaster with the Magical Resonance perk can't die of overload while in the Magic Realm.
- Type death.toggle false to switch death off.
The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, pregnant Sims.
These moodlets stop it before the end: Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, Grimbucha'd.
The ghost
A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Spellcaster Overload. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.
Every ghost type and its powers are on the ghosts page. See also: Spellcasters: every spell and perk.
To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_WitchOverload. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.
To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).
How spellcaster overload kills your Sim
First, your spellcaster must build up magic until they get the Magical Overload warning moodlet. When the Sim's magic overloads, the game draws from weighted outcomes to decide their fate. There are no timers to wait out once the overload starts.
In a standard overload, the fatal outcome has a weight of 1. The survival outcome has a weight of 2. This gives your Sim a 33.33 base chance to die per overload, meaning they usually survive the first time.
What changes the odds of overload death
Certain conditions change the weight of the fatal outcome. If your Sim has the Magical Resonance perk and stands in the Magic Realm, the death weight multiplier becomes 0. Your spellcaster cannot die of an overload in that location with that perk.
On the other hand, the Chased by Death trait makes overloading much more dangerous. If your Sim has the This Is Your Final Warning... moodlet from that trait, the death weight multiplier becomes 999,999. This makes the overload almost certainly fatal.
Several special states protect your Sim from dying. Sims are safe if they have Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, or Grimbucha'd. You can also open the cheat console in Live mode and type death.toggle false to stop every death that runs through a death interaction.
The overload ghost and how to resurrect
When a Sim dies this way, they become a ghost with the Death by Spellcaster Overload trait. The game files list this trait as trait_Ghost_WitchOverload. Note that using death.toggle false does not stop a Sim from turning into a ghost by other means.
You can bring a ghost in your household back to life using the cheat console in Live mode. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac to open the cheat console. Type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_WitchOverload to remove the ghost trait and resurrect the Sim.
