Death by Freezing

A Sim who stays in freezing weather too long freezes to death. Freezing, from the first warning to death: 100 Sim minutes. Safe: Servo, pregnant Sims.

To cause Death by Freezing in The Sims 4, leave your Sim in freezing weather until the Freezing moodlet appears. You need the Seasons expansion pack, known as EP05, for this death.

Once the Freezing moodlet starts, a hidden timer runs until your Sim freezes to death. Extreme cold fills the freezing meter much faster than regular freezing weather.

The warning moodlet is called Freezing.

How to make it happen

  1. Leave the Sim in the cold until the Freezing moodlet appears (Seasons).
  2. Extreme cold fills the freezing meter much faster.

How to avoid it

  1. Get rid of the Freezing moodlet before the meter fills.
  2. A sleeping Sim doesn't freeze.
  3. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, pregnant Sims.

These moodlets stop it before the end: Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, Grimbucha'd.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Freezing. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Frozen. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How the freezing timer kills a Sim

When your Sim stays in the cold too long, the game gives them the Freezing moodlet. This warning starts a hidden meter at 0 that kills the Sim when it reaches 100. In normal freezing weather, the meter rises by 1 each Sim-minute, which gives you 100 Sim-minutes before death.

Extreme weather changes how fast this meter fills up. In extreme cold, the meter rises by 8 each Sim-minute instead of 1. This leaves you with only 12.5 Sim-minutes from the first warning to death.

Who can freeze and how to survive

Child, Teen, Young Adult, Adult, and Elder Sims can die from freezing. A sleeping Sim does not freeze, and you can save an awake Sim by removing the Freezing moodlet before the meter reaches 100. Certain states also save a Sim from this death, including Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, and Grimbucha'd.

You can also use a cheat to stop the death from happening. Open the cheat console in Live mode by pressing Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac. Type death.toggle false to stop every death that runs through a death interaction, though it does not stop a Sim from becoming a ghost by other means.

The Frozen ghost and resurrection cheat

When the freezing meter reaches 100, your Sim dies and gets the Death by Freezing ghost trait, named trait_ghost_Frozen. The tuning ID for this death type is 182185.

You can bring a Frozen ghost in your household back to life with a cheat in Live mode. Open the cheat console and type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Frozen. Removing this ghost trait restores your Sim to life right away.
