Death by Steam

A Sim who sits in a steam room far too long dies of overheating. Sitting in a steam room, from walking in to death: 200 Sim minutes. Safe: Servo, Vampire, pregnant Sims.

To cause Death by Steam in The Sims 4, you need the Spa Day game pack. Send your Sim into a steam room and force them to stay inside.

A hidden timer tracks how long your Sim sits in the steam. After 200 Sim-minutes of sitting, your Sim dies of overheating. Your Sim tries to leave when they get too hot, so you must command them to sit again.

The warning moodlet is called Superfluous Steaming.

How to make it happen

  1. Sit in a steam room (Spa Day) and stay long after Superfluous Steaming appears.
  2. Sims try to get out on their own when the steam gets too much, so keep sending them back.

How to avoid it

  1. Leave the steam room when Superfluous Steaming appears.
  2. Vampires can't die this way.
  3. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, Vampire, pregnant Sims.

These moodlets stop it before the end: Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, Grimbucha'd.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Steam. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Steam. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How the steam room timer works

Death by Steam uses a guaranteed timer instead of random chance. Sitting in the steam room adds 0.5 per Sim-minute to a hidden exposure counter. When that counter hits 100, the Sim dies.

This process takes 200 Sim-minutes from the moment your Sim walks in and sits down. Before the timer finishes, your Sim gets the Superfluous Steaming warning moodlet. This moodlet tells you that the exposure counter is dangerously high.

Sims with the Superfluous Steaming moodlet try to leave the steam room on their own. To finish the timer and kill the Sim, you must cancel their exit and make them sit back down. If you want to save your Sim, let them walk out of the room.

Which Sims are safe from steam

Most ages can die in the steam room, including Child, Teen, Young Adult, Adult, and Elder Sims. Vampires are completely immune to Death by Steam and can sit in the room safely.

Certain special statuses also protect your Sim from overheating. Sims with Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, or Grimbucha'd will survive the timer.

You can also stop this death with a cheat. Open the cheat console in Live mode with Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac. Type death.toggle false to stop every death that runs through a death interaction.

The Death by Steam ghost and resurrection

A Sim who dies in a steam room becomes a ghost with the Death by Steam ghost trait. In the game files, this trait has the name trait_ghost_Steam.

You can bring a ghost in your household back to life using the cheat console. First, open the console in Live mode. Then type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Steam to remove the ghost trait and restore your Sim.
