How do you die of lightning in The Sims 4?

Death by Lightning

During a storm, a Sim who is struck by lightning again while still Supercharged can die. The chance is 40% per lightning strike. Safe: Servo, pregnant Sims.

Death by Lightning in The Sims 4 comes with the Seasons expansion pack. Your Sim can die when lightning strikes them a second time during a storm.

A single lightning strike does not kill a Sim. It gives them the Supercharged moodlet instead. If lightning hits your Sim again while they still have this moodlet, they face a base 40 chance of dying.

How to make it happen

  1. Get struck by lightning outside during a storm (Seasons).
  2. Get struck again while Supercharged.

How to avoid it

  1. Bring a Supercharged Sim indoors until the moodlet wears off.
  2. Storm Chaser Sims never get the deadly outcome.
  3. Loves Outdoors and Erratic Sims are less likely to die from a second strike.
  4. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, pregnant Sims.

These moodlets stop it before the end: Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, Grimbucha'd.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Lightning. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

Every ghost type and its powers are on the ghosts page.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_Lightning. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How a second lightning strike kills Sims

To trigger this death, send your Sim outside during a storm until lightning hits them once. This first hit applies the Supercharged warning moodlet, which puts your Sim at risk.

Keep your Sim outside in the storm so lightning can hit them again before the Supercharged moodlet wears off. When the second strike happens, the game picks between two weighted outcomes.

The fatal outcome has a weight of 1, while the survival outcome has a weight of 1.5. This gives a standard Sim a base 40 chance to die on that second strike, while surviving makes them Hypercharged instead.

Traits and statuses that prevent lightning death

Several traits change what happens when lightning strikes a Supercharged Sim. Sims with the Loves Outdoors or Erratic trait get a multiplier of 2 on the survival weight, making them less likely to die. Storm Chaser Sims never get the deadly outcome at all.

Some Sims cannot die from lightning under any normal conditions. A Servo is immune to this death, though the fatal outcome can trigger a robot electric overload death instead. Sims are also saved if they have Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, or Grimbucha'd.

If you want to protect a regular Sim without traits, bring them indoors as soon as they become Supercharged. You can also open the cheat console in Live mode and type death.toggle false to stop every death that runs through a death interaction.

The Death by Lightning ghost and resurrection

When a Sim dies from a second strike, they become a ghost with the Death by Lightning ghost trait. In the game files, this trait is called trait_Ghost_Lightning.

You can bring this ghost back to life using the cheat console in Live mode. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac to open the cheat console.

Once cheats are active, add the ghost to your household and type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_Lightning. Removing the ghost trait from a ghost in your household brings the Sim back to life right away.
