Death by Hunger

A Sim whose Hunger runs out completely starves to death after a stretch of being Ravenous. From a full Hunger bar to death, with no food: 960 Sim minutes. Safe: Servo, pregnant Sims.

To cause Death by Hunger in The Sims 4, stop your Sim from eating until their Hunger bar empties. This base game death happens on a fixed timer as the Hunger need drops.

You do not need any expansion packs to trigger this outcome. When your Sim gets the Ravenous moodlet, the starvation timer is almost up. If you still do not feed them, they starve to death.

How to make it happen

  1. Keep the Sim from eating until the Hunger bar empties.
  2. The Ravenous moodlet means the end is close.

How to avoid it

  1. Feed the Sim when they are Hungry.
  2. Type sims.fill_all_commodities (with testingcheats on) to fill every need.
  3. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, pregnant Sims.

These moodlets stop it before the end: Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, Grimbucha'd.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Hunger. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Hunger. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How the starvation timer works in play

The Hunger need runs from a maximum of 100 down to a failure point of -100. In normal play, the bar drops by 0.2083 per Sim-minute. If a Sim starts with a full bar and eats nothing, they die in 960 Sim-minutes.

You get a clear warning before the death happens. When the Hunger value drops below -75, the Sim receives the Ravenous moodlet. This warning gives you 120 Sim-minutes to feed your Sim before the need hits -100 and kills them.

What blocks starvation and saves your Sim

You can prevent this death at any time by feeding your Sim when they are Hungry. Certain states also protect a Sim from dying of starvation. These include Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, and Grimbucha'd.

You can also use cheats in Live mode to save a starving Sim. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC, Cmd + Shift + C on Mac, or all four shoulder buttons on console. Type testingcheats true, and then enter the cheat from the table to fill every need.

If you want to stop deaths from running, enter death.toggle false in the cheat box. This command stops every death that runs through a death interaction. It does not stop a Sim from turning into a ghost by other means.

The Hunger ghost and how to revive them

When a Sim starves, they become a ghost with the Death by Hunger ghost trait. If the ghost is in your household, you can bring them back to life with a cheat. Open the cheat console in Live mode to enter the resurrection command.

Type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Hunger and press Enter. Removing this ghost trait from a household ghost restores the Sim to life right away.
