To cause Death by Sunlight in The Sims 4, keep a vampire in direct sunlight. This death comes with the Vampires game pack. While your Sim stands in the sun, watch for The Third Degree moodlet.
Leave the vampire in the sun while this moodlet is active, and they burn up. You can speed up this process with the Sunlight weakness. To keep your vampire alive, keep them out of the sun.

The ghost
A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Sunlight. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Vampire_Sun. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.
To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).
How the sunlight timer kills a vampire
Death by Sunlight uses a hidden sun exposure timer, not random chance. When a vampire stands in direct sunlight, they get The Third Degree warning moodlet. This moodlet drains the sun exposure value from 100 down to -100.
For a standard vampire at full sun exposure, the value drops by -3.33333 each Sim-minute. This means the Sim dies after 60 Sim-minutes in direct sun. Keep vampires out of the sun to avoid this death.
Vampire perks and weaknesses change how fast this timer runs. The worst sunlight weakness changes the drain to -40 a Sim-minute, which kills the vampire in 5 Sim-minutes. The first sun resistance perk slows the timer to 90 Sim-minutes, and the second slows it to 120 Sim-minutes.
Who is safe from burning in the sun
This death affects Child, Teen, Young Adult, Adult, and Elder vampires. Ghost vampires cannot die this way. Several statuses also save a Sim from dying, including Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, and Grimbucha'd.
You can also prevent this death with a cheat in Live mode. Open the cheat console with Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac. Type death.toggle false to stop every death that runs through a death interaction.
The sunlight ghost and how to resurrect
When a vampire dies from sunlight, they become a ghost with the Death by Sunlight ghost trait. The game files list this trait as trait_ghost_Vampire_Sun. Because ghost vampires cannot die from sunlight again, your ghost Sim can walk in the sun.
You can bring a ghost in your household back to life by removing their ghost trait. Open the cheat console in Live mode and type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Vampire_Sun. Removing this trait restores the Sim to life.
