Death by Laughter

A young adult or older Sim who is Hysterical can laugh themselves to death. The chance is 10% per outburst animation. Safe: Servo, Vampire, Cringe, Shady, pregnant Sims.

To cause Death by Laughter in The Sims 4, you must push your Sim into the Hysterical emotion. Hysterical is the strongest level of Playful. Only young adults, adults, and elders can die this way.

Once your Sim is Hysterical, they do not die right away. Instead, the game checks for death each time they have an emotional outburst. If you keep your Sim Hysterical, one of these outbursts can eventually kill them.

How to make it happen

  1. Make the Sim Hysterical, the strongest level of Playful.
  2. Keep them Hysterical: each outburst can be fatal.
  3. Only young adults, adults and elders can die this way.

How to avoid it

  1. Get the Sim out of Hysterical before the next outburst.
  2. Vampires, Cringe Sims and Shady Sims (Businesses & Hobbies) can't die of laughter.
  3. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, Vampire, Cringe, Shady, pregnant Sims.

These moodlets stop it before the end: Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, Grimbucha'd.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Laughter. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Laugher. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How the Hysterical outburst roll works

Death by Laughter is a base game mechanic that relies on chance rather than a fixed timer. When your Sim is in the Hysterical state, they will periodically perform an emotional outburst animation. Each outburst triggers a roll with a 10% base chance to kill the Sim.

The game picks from three weighted outcomes during this animation. One outcome has a weight of 1 and leads to death, while the other two have weights of 4 and 5 and let your Sim live. Because the roll is low, your Sim will usually survive the first outburst.

If your Sim survives the animation, a cooldown timer starts. The game locks out the next outburst for 30 to 50 minutes. You have that window to lower their Playful mood before the game rolls that 10% chance again.

Who is safe from dying of laughter

Several types of Sims are completely safe from this death. Sims younger than young adults cannot die from laughter. Vampires, Cringe Sims, and Shady Sims from Businesses & Hobbies are also immune to Hysterical deaths.

Nothing in the game files changes the 10% chance per outburst, as there are no multipliers for this roll. However, certain states will save a Sim even if they lose the roll. Sims with Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, or Grimbucha'd will survive.

If you want to protect your household without changing their traits, you can use a cheat in Live mode. Open the cheat console by pressing Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac. Type death.toggle false to stop every death that runs through a death interaction.

The Death by Laughter ghost and resurrection

When a Sim dies from an outburst, they turn into a ghost with the Death by Laughter ghost trait. You can bring this Sim back to life at any time using the cheat console in Live mode.

First, add the ghost to your household if they are not already a member. Open the console and type traits.remove_trait trait_ghost_Laugher. Removing this ghost trait immediately restores your Sim to life.
