Death by Mold

A Sim who breathes toxic mold until it is deadly dies of Moldinitis. Warning before the mold kills: 20 Sim minutes. Safe: Servo, pregnant Sims.

To cause Death by Mold in The Sims 4, you need the For Rent expansion pack. Let toxic mold grow in a rental lot and keep your Sim near it.

Your Sim breathes the spores and gets Mild Moldinitis, which turns Severe and then becomes Deadly Moldinitis. When the toxic mold meter reaches its limit and the final timer runs out, your Sim dies.

How to make it happen

  1. Let mold grow in a rental (For Rent) and stay near it.
  2. Mild Moldinitis turns Severe and then Deadly.

How to avoid it

  1. Scrub the spores off or set off a mold bomb.
  2. Type death.toggle false to switch death off.

The game never lets this death happen to: Servo, pregnant Sims.

These moodlets stop it before the end: Death-Proof, Total Immortal, Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, Grimbucha'd.

The ghost

A Sim who dies this way becomes a ghost with the trait Death by Mold. The game gives each death type its own ghost trait.

To bring the ghost back to life with a cheat, type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_MoldSystem. Removing its last ghost trait makes the Sim alive again.

To stop your Sims from dying at all, type death.toggle false (what death.toggle does).

How the mold sickness and death timer work

Death by Mold uses a hidden sickness meter and a countdown timer rather than random chance. As your Sim stays near toxic mold, their sickness progresses from Mild to Severe.

When the toxic meter reaches 61, your Sim gets the Deadly Moldinitis warning moodlet. If theSim stays near the mold and the meter reaches 99, the final death stage begins.

This final stage starts a hidden counter at 60 that drops by 3 each Sim-minute. You have 20 Sim-minutes to save your Sim before the counter hits 0 and kills them.

How to survive or prevent mold death

You can stop the sickness by taking care of the spores. Scrub the spores off or set off a mold bomb to clear the hazard.

Certain conditions also protect your Sim from dying. Sims with the Death-Proof or Total Immortal statuses survive this death.

Several Grim-related statuses also save your Sim from toxic mold. These include Feeling Grim, Grimness Intensifies, Grim Overload, and Grimbucha'd. You can also turn off deaths in Live mode by opening the cheat console and typing death.toggle false.

The mold ghost and how to resurrect

When a Sim dies from Moldinitis, they become a ghost with the Death by Mold ghost trait. The game files list this trait as trait_Ghost_MoldSystem.

You can bring a mold ghost back to life using the cheat console in Live mode. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Cmd + Shift + C on Mac to open the box.

Type traits.remove_trait trait_Ghost_MoldSystem to remove the ghost trait from a ghost in your household and restore their life.
