How to go to university in The Sims 4

How to go to university in Sims 4 Discover University: apply, scholarships, loans, classes, graduation, distinguished degrees and degree cheats.

Get The Sims 4 Discover University expansion pack. Then apply on the computer, wait for the acceptance letter, and enroll. Without the pack, your Sims cannot go to university.

The official blog post gave the release dates. The pack came to PC and Mac on November 15, 2019. It came to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on December 17, 2019. It adds the world of Britechester and two schools: the University of Britechester and the Foxbury Institute.

Who can go to university?

Any Young Adult or older Sim can go. The SimGuru Q&A says that Adults and Elders can enroll at any time after they get accepted. Teens can apply about a week before they age up, but they cannot enroll until they are Young Adults.

Step by step: apply and enroll

  1. Click the computer and open the University option. Choose to apply.
  2. Pay the fee. Sims Community says that an application costs §75.
  3. Wait for the acceptance letter. It comes in the mail the next day.
  4. Apply for scholarships on the phone, the computer, or the mailbox.
  5. Enroll on the computer. Pick the school, the degree, the classes, and housing.
  6. Pay the tuition with household funds, scholarships, or a student loan.

Is your teen still in high school? Read our High School Years guide. games.gg says that teens with that pack can graduate early and go straight to university.

No, not from a standard degree. Sims Community says that the school always accepts your Sim into standard degrees. Grades and skills only matter for distinguished degrees.

What is a distinguished degree?

A distinguished degree is a harder version of a degree. The SimGuru Q&A says that it needs more skill and better school grades. It also gives better career rewards. Each school offers distinguished degrees in different subjects.

SchoolDistinguished degrees
University of BritechesterArt History, Communications, Culinary Arts, Drama, Fine Art, History, Language and Literature
Foxbury InstituteBiology, Computer Science, Economics, Physics, Psychology, Villainy

Both schools teach all 13 degrees as standard degrees. So a Sim can study Drama at Foxbury, but only Britechester gives a distinguished Drama degree.

How do you get into a distinguished degree?

Raise the skills that fit the degree before you apply. Keep the high school grades high. The acceptance letter lists the degrees that accepted your Sim. A Sim can get in at one school and not at the other. Use the Sims 4 skills guide to plan the skills.

Scholarships pay part of the tuition, and the game takes them off the bill. A student loan pays the rest. You pay the loan back after your Sim graduates.

What scholarships are there?

Sims Community lists six types of scholarships:

  • Distinguished: automatic for each distinguished degree that accepts your Sim.
  • Need-based: Education for All and Helping Hand, for households with less money.
  • Skill: for skills such as cooking, fishing, and handiness. Not for Adults or Elders.
  • Career: for Teens and Young Adults with some success in a career.
  • Sports and E-Sports: for a Soccer Team Player or an E-Sports Competitor.
  • Resident Grant: for Teens and Young Adults. The amount changes by location.

A Sim that is eligible does not always win a scholarship. So apply for all the scholarships that your Sim can get.

Do you lose your scholarship in Sims 4?

Yes, if your Sim takes a break. Sims Community says that a Sim with scholarships must enroll in a new term at once. If it does not, it loses them. The official blog post also warns that bad grades can put a scholarship or grant at risk.

How do you pay off student loans?

The official blog post says that payments are due as soon as your Sim graduates. Sims Community says that you pay the loan back with interest. The SimGuru Q&A says that there is “no reasonable limit on loans.” We found no official interest rate. Need more money first? Read how to make money in Sims 4.

A Sim takes up to four classes in each term. A term lasts five working days. A Sim needs 12 credits to graduate. Grades come at the end of each term.

At enrollment, choose four standard classes, or three standard classes and one elective. Fewer classes give more free time. But then your Sim needs more terms to get the 12 credits.

How do you get good grades?

  • Go to every class. Sims go to class on their own, a little early.
  • In class, choose Actively Listen or Take Notes. Do not sleep or chat.
  • Do the homework. Every course has homework due before every class.
  • Study with the course book. Buy it at the university kiosk.
  • Write term papers on the computer, in the University menu.
  • Give presentations in the day. Your Sim cannot give them at night.
  • Take every exam. A missed exam gives a zero.

To check progress, visit the professor in office hours or send an email from the computer. The SimGuru Q&A says that Sims cannot hack their grades.

Why is my Sim failing university?

A Steam player asked this in a thread called “University... help?” The replies gave the same advice as the guides. Raise the Research & Debate skill before you enroll. Take fewer classes. Start term papers early. Live off campus to save travel time.

Sims Community says that a high Research & Debate skill makes homework and term papers faster. games.gg says to reach level 3 first. It also says that a lot with the Study Spot lot trait helps with homework.

Where do university students live?

There are three choices. Stay at home for free. Move into university housing for a fee. Or move off campus to a lot that your Sim can pay for. Sims Community says that a household of one Sim cannot move off campus. Britechester has three neighborhoods: UBrite, Foxbury, and Gibbs Hill.

What else is there to do?

Join a school organization. Britechester has the Art Society, the Debate Guild, and the Spirit Corps. Foxbury has the Bot Savants, the Brainiacs, and the Spirit Squad. There is also a secret society, the Order of Enchantment. Sims can also join the E-Sports team or the Soccer team, and build robots.

Your Sim gets the degree and can start a matching career at a higher level. Snooty Sims says that the ceremony is optional. You do not see the ceremony itself.

Sims that go to the ceremony appear outside the stadium after it. They get a “Graduated University” moodlet and a graduation poster. The student loan payments also start now.

What does a degree do in Sims 4?

There are four types of degree: regular, with Honors, Distinguished, and Distinguished with Honors. For honors, Snooty Sims says that your Sim needs a GPA of 3.9 or higher. The degree type sets the career level where your Sim starts:

Degree typeStart level in a matching career
RegularLevel 6
With Honors, or DistinguishedLevel 7
Distinguished with HonorsLevel 8

A degree can also give higher pay, easier promotions, and more vacation days. The SimGuru Q&A says that no career needs a degree. The pack also added three new careers: Education, Engineering, and Law. For the next step, read how to get a job in Sims 4.

Which degree for which career?

Snooty Sims matches some degrees to careers. Here are a few examples:

  • Biology: doctor, conservationist, athlete.
  • Computer Science: tech guru, engineer, freelancer.
  • Culinary Arts: chef, food critic.
  • Drama: actor, comedian, internet personality.
  • Physics: scientist, space ranger, engineer.
  • Villainy: criminal, secret agent.

Open the cheat console and type testingcheats true. Then give the degree as a trait. Use this pattern:

traits.equip_trait trait_University_[Program]Degree[Type]

Replace [Program] with a name such as ArtHistory, Biology, or ComputerScience. Replace [Type] with BA, BAHonors, BS, or BSHonors. GGRecon says that BA codes are for Britechester and BS codes are for Foxbury. It also says that the Honors codes give a distinguished degree with honors. Check the result in the Simology panel.

CheatWhat it does
traits.equip_trait trait_University_BiologyDegreeBSGives a Biology degree

stats.set_skill_level Major_ResearchDebate 10Sets Research & Debate to level 10
stats.set_skill_level Major_Robotics 10Sets Robotics to level 10

Is there a cheat to enroll or graduate?

To enroll, turn on testing cheats. Then use Shift and click your Sim, and find the enroll option in the menu. GGRecon also lists University.Graduate, University.Finish_Term, and University.Award_All_Degrees. Snooty Sims says that these need the All Cheats mod by TwistedMexi. The two guides disagree, so try them and check.

For all other codes, read the full Sims 4 cheats list. For tuition money, use the money cheat. To jump a teen to Young Adult, use the age up cheat.
